Challenging times

Sunday's message:
Baby steps… and unlimited exercise.

It's an intriguing combination.

I have a challenge for you: an all-day walk (or jog?) with no stride longer than a foot. I'm jittery just thinking about it. I reckon I'd fall over one of my feet soon after breakfast.

But challenges are good. Aren't they? The challenge of getting up at a sensible time and committing to the day's obligations (do I mean me, or the students?); the challenge of being positive; the challenge of being just the right amount of positive to keep those around you buoyed rather than infuriated… (I'm not irritating, I'm just enthusiastic…); the challenge of acknowledging the difficulties – sometimes there are no solutions.

Exercise and challenge are, of course, very happy get-out-of-bed fellows. Parents of OWs Mrs Silovsky and Mrs Spray are south of Paris and on the way to Barcelona by (indoor) bike as you read, sharing morning rides by Facebook, off to meet Mrs S's daughter Anna. They'll be back in time for tea, and chocolate, and lots of other treats, some time in June they hope! And Mr Spray, not to be outdone, is nearly back from the equivalent of his favourite pasty shop in Hayle, Cornwall, thanks to his cumulative daily circuits on the real roads around Snape. When he completes the ride, his only disappointment will be the lack of pasty.

You may have glanced, clammy-sweaty, at Mr Goddard's weekly running programme. Not for the fainthearted. Just for the superheroes. Don't worry, though; you can exercise all day now.

And I'll be coming cap in hand to you all in June to ask you to support me in my challenge: a solo London to Woodbridge bike ride now that I have had to cancel the School version (its first cancellation since I started it in 1998). Of course I'll have to cycle to London the day before so I have a bike to ride back on… so it's 184 miles in two days… along with trying to raise £10,000 to maintain the annual average… I take my inspiration from Captain Tom. I take my padded shorts from Altura.

Captain Tom's achievement was wonderful, emotional, uplifting, and brought me to tears. I also tested the tissues watching the VE Day DIY-SOS… Here were two (amongst so many) recently shared endeavours that have been extraordinarily life-affirming.

So whether you have found a challenge, sewn scrubs or made a mask, whether you have fulfilled your role as a key worker, helped a friend or lifted a spirit, whether you have baked, basked or TikTok boogied, I hope you have found ways to cheer yourself up and give yourself a cheer.

Meanwhile, if you are looking around for the next way you can help those less fortunate… keep an eye out for my bike ride appeal!
Young Enterprise team best in Suffolk
Woodbridge School has won the Suffolk championship of Young Enterprise!

The BeeCause company's mission is to raise awareness of the diminishing Bee population and to do this they make products which are associated with Bees such as wax food wraps, wooden bee houses and bee themed jewellery. They have had stalls at Woodbridge Christmas market, the School Christmas fair and various shows at the Seckford Theatre.

The Suffolk leg of the competition took place virtually this year. The teams had to submit their company report in writing as per usual, but their presentation was recorded and sent on with evidence of their trade stalls. Our 'bee'rilliant entrepreneurs are now looking forward to competing in the regional finals later in the year. We wish them all the best!
Endurance running

This week he suggests that you stay focused and positive.

If you are a competitor you may be starting to question whether the effort is worth it...  YES IT IS!

In fact, this is the perfect opportunity to put the hammer down (responsibly of course... watch out for the early warning signs of injury or fatigue, and take time out if your body is telling you to).
