Pray Again
May 15, 2020
In a time when we have limited ability to interact with others, we have plenty of time to talk to God. My prayers during this time range from small requests like, "Lord, help me get on this treadmill" to larger "God, let the people see your sovereignty in all of this."

Prayer is simple. It's just talking to God. However, like talking with other powerful persons, it can be intimidating. Sometimes we don't know exactly what to say.  There's a lot of stuff in the Bible about how to pray. This week, I'll highlight just a few things.
SCRIPTURE
"Never stop praying.”
1 Thessalonians  5:17
PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for who you are. Help us to believe it.  Amen!
In Matthew 21:22 Jesus said, "You can pray for anything and if you have faith, you will receive it."

Whole books on prayer have been written by really smart people. High-level classes on prayer are taught by experts with advance degrees. Me? I'm just a chick who needs Jesus so I pray a lot.  I've found that the key to answered prayer is faith, just like Jesus said.  Faith isn't just hoping God will do something. It's not even knowing God can do it.  Faith is knowing God will do it.

Have Faith to Confess
Confess the ugly truth to God.  If you're jealous, say it. If you're angry, say it. If your faith is shaky, say it! In Mark 9, a man asked Jesus to heal his son.  He said, "Help us if you can." IF HE CAN? This is Jesus we're talking about. Jesus responded to the man, "Anything is possible if a person believes."  The man asked Jesus to help him believe. He kept it real about his doubts. Jesus didn't turn him away. He healed the man's son and strengthened the man's faith in the process.  You can tell God anything.  I mean...He already knows, so why not have the faith to say it?

Have Faith to Pray From God's Heart
"Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done."  When we pray this, we ask God to do whatever he wants to do in our lives.  Psalm 37:4 says that God will give us the desires of our heart. This doesn't mean that He'll deliver our every wish.  It means that when we spend time with God and build a relationship with him, he fills our hearts. He also removes anything he doesn't want to be there. When we ask God for things from our Christ-centered hearts, we're asking for things he already plans to give us.

Have Faith to Pray from God's Word
When you know the promises of God from the Bible you can pray with confidence. God is a healer. God is a provider. God protects us. God orders our steps. Read your Bible regularly and find a scripture to support your prayer.  Study the teachings of Jesus so you know what to pray for. God's word is true and if you pray and believe, you'll receive all that God has for you.

Have Faith to Pray as God's Child
For as long as I can remember, I have believed in God through Jesus.  However,  I didn't believe God loved me like everybody else because too much bad stuff happened early in my life. I knew what God could do. I just didn't believe he would do it for me. So, I often prayed out of desperation, not faith.  Jesus reminds us in Luke 11:13. "So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"   If you are a parent, you know how hard it is to say "no" to your children— and you only do it when it's best for them. God loves you. Trust that He's doing what's best for you.

Have Faith to Keep Praying
One of my favorite passages in the Bible is the Parable of the Persistent Widow in Luke 18.  Right now there's a prayer that you think God hasn't answered. Maybe He just hasn't answered yet!  I'm a witness that God will answer prayers years later. You don't need to be a theologian to understand Jesus' words in Matthew 7:7. "Keep on asking and you will receive what you ask for."

Here's the deal...

The more you spend time with God in prayer, the better you get to know him.  As you pray,  God might show you that what you're praying for is not what he wants for you.  Can I get an amen!  As you pray,  he may tell you that you need to change before he answers you. Umm.. amen again.  When you pray, God might show you that the person you're praying about is not the problem, you are.  Oh Halleleujah!

Prayer is the foundation of our relationship with God.  Our faith in him comes by hearing and... "the message is heard through the word about Christ."  (Romans 10:17)

Jesus wasn't joking when he said we can receive anything if we believe. Be honest. Do you have enough faith...

To confess the truth?
To let God do whatever he wants in your life?
To keep praying when you don't get an answer?
To study God's word to guide your prayer?
To accept that God's love is enough?
