The GASP Guide to Clean Air Month: A How-to for You

When May rolls around and the days get longer and warmer, people are more than ready to head outside to take their dogs for a walk, plant their gardens, hit the hiking trails, or just throw open their windows to enjoy a fresh breeze – making it fitting that it’s been designated as Clean Air Month.

Supported by the American Lung Association, Clean Air Month is a time to observe the importance of healthy air quality, understand its effects on your health, and educate yourself on ways to help improve it locally.

Because even though the greater Pittsburgh area has come a long way when it comes to air quality, it still has a long way to go to ensure that every one of its citizens can breathe easy.

So, to help folks celebrate the occasion, your friendly neighborhood clean air advocates at GASP put together this guide, where we’ll teach you everything from what’s in the air you breathe to how to make an air quality complaint. We also explain how to check out what air pollution sources are near you and how to monitor air quality in your neighborhood. Check it out!
Surprising Sources of Air Pollution: 6 Ways Animal Farms Contribute to Poor Air Quality

While billowing smoke emanating from industrial complexes and trucks belching diesel emissions might be what people most closely associate with air pollution, they certainly aren’t the only culprits. Since it’s Clean Air Month, we wanted to put the spotlight on some sources of air pollution that might surprise you.

Today, we want to focus on the impact of agricultural operations like corporate animal farms on air quality and fill you in on these six quick facts about the problem.
YOU'RE INVITED: Woodland Hills & Communitopia Share How to Get Involved in Climate Action

During these uncertain times, the world is (rightly) focused on saving lives, but the climate crisis remains an extraordinary threat.

Now more than ever, it’s important to find strength and connection within our communities. Be inspired: Join a digital community of youth standing strong for climate action!

The Woodland Hills School District became the first in the state of Pennsylvania to pass a district-level climate action resolution, all because of a dedicated group of students determined to create a more sustainable future for themselves.

Now Pittsburgh nonprofit Communitopia is teaming up with Woodland Hills for a webinar – and you’re invited. In this webinar you’ll meet three of the students responsible for the eco-friendly initiatives occurring at Woodland Hills and hear their stories of climate advocacy.

Interested? The online event will take place from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 26. You can register online.
Together, we can make a difference in our region's environment. We won't trade or sell your email address with other organizations or inundate you with messages.
