For those of you attending the Lunch and Learn: We will ask that you turn your cameras on to participate, so please be prepared to have people see you! We want this to be as much like an in-person discussion as possible.

I hope you will join with me this Sunday in welcoming the Rev. Dr. Whit Bodman, an expert on Islam's Sharia Law, and an active advocate of Interfaith dialogue. Whit will deliver our Sunday message and lead a "lunch and learn" (immediately following our service) focused on your questions regarding the Islamic faith.
After many years as a Congregational pastor in Massachusetts, Whit pursued a doctorate in Comparative Religion and Islamic Studies. He then ventured inland to teach Comparative Religion at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. A year ago he retired from teaching to write and speak about Islam, mainly among Christians. He continues to be involved in a number of Interfaith organizations focused on public policy, dialogue, and church mission on the local, regional, and national levels. I had the good fortune to study Comparative Religions with Whit while in seminary and found him to be a lively and engaging teacher as well as a good-humored, down-to-earth person. I feel this will be a very rich experience for our congregation and look forward to sharing this with you! See you Sunday! With much love, Linda

UCOG Board Update regarding in-person meetings:

The UCOG board met Tuesday for its regular May meeting. On the agenda was a discussion regarding how/when to move back to in-person meetings. We all felt the time is not yet right for us. It was decided that we would spend the next month:

discerning what criteria we would use to evaluate when it is safe to return to in-person meetings
discerning how/if the physical space at the Chamber can be conducive to social distancing recommendations
determining what additional measures would need to be in place to ensure the safety of our congregation.

With 75% of our active participants over 65, we constitute a group which has been deemed as a high-risk demographic for the COVID-19 virus. Our only concern is for the safety and well-being of all of our congregants, therefore, we will be extremely cautious in all determinations. We will be seeking in-put from our congregation in the next few weeks as to what you would need to feel safe in returning. There is no plan to return to in-person meetings as of this time. We will gather information and bring the topic up again at the June meeting. The Chamber waived our rent in May and we will be in conversation with the Chamber regarding our plans. To reiterate: the only driving force will be the safety and well-being of all of our congregants. If you have questions or concerns, please email us HERE.
