Christ Episcopal Church is an affirming and inclusive Christian community. Our members and leaders strive through love, worship and service to welcome all people just as God created them. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, or economic condition. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we.
IN THIS LIMINAL SPACE
A Message fromThe Rev. Rilla Barrett
Dear Friends,
As we dwell in this in-between time, we dip into the source of our being and find strength. In this liminal space, we are betwixt and between, almost as if we have left a room, but aren’t quite into the next room. February and early March and our “regular” lives, schedules, work and worship are behind us, and we are here, waiting for what is to come in what may be a new way. It is clearly a time of uncertainty, for while we long to return to life as it was then, we are uncertain about re-entering it as it was. Dare we enter that life again? And how and when? In-between leaves us uncertain, but we are Easter people and we recognize our way.
Someone I know who is experiencing some of life’s bumps, recently said to me, “Yesterday, in the midst of the difficulties, I felt peace and a strength I didn’t know I had. It was with me all day, and I knew it.” This type of experience is not foreign to us as children of our loving God. Even in the midst of disorienting, mundane, ongoing liminal time, we know our strength. As we wait for what will be, we are surrounded by the light of what was and is.
In her book Waking Up To This Day: Seeing the Beauty Right Before Us, author Paula D’Arcy offers us this wisdom.
“Hardly anything turns out the way you expected it to, and you’re frequently ready to write life off as too paradoxical and too difficult to endure. Then some indescribable light fights its way through the impenetrable dark.”(p. 53)
May we each know that indescribable light and its source. Peace and grace as you dwell in the in-between.
