Botanic Endeavour 250

This year marks 250 years since the HMB Endeavour, captained by James Cook, traversed Australia’s east coast between Point Hicks, Victoria and Cape York, Queensland.

The HMB Endeavour was on a voyage of discovery for geography and science. Among the many people on board were botanists and naturalists, Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, and their team of botanical artists, who collected, observed and illustrated more than 520 plants as they travelled the east coast.

To commemorate the voyage, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens will release a new self-guided walk and signage for visitors to discover some of the locally occurring plant species that were collected by Banks and Solander.

Our local botanic artists will showcase some of our local plants species that were collected by Banks and Solander in the Lagoons Gallery at the Botanic Gardens Café in June. We look forward to seeing you in the gardens on your next visit.

Daisy day plantings

We have recently planted 820 seedlings of Xerochrysum bracteatum, commonly known as Golden Everlasting Daisies along the banks of the Lagoons (below the café), at the Sugar Cane wall (near the main entrance) and in the Timber Trees Garden to be enjoyed in the coming months.

Golden Everlasting Daisies' are a flowering plant from the Asteraceae family and is a widespread and variable species. They are available in other colours, however our local species are bright yellow. You can see these growing in their natural setting at Slade Point Reserve and beside roads and the highway south of Koumala.

The Golden Everlasting Daisies brightly coloured bracts act as petals to attract insects. This plant serves as food for various butterfly larvae and moths, adult butterflies, native bees, grasshoppers and small beetles who also visit the flower heads. We would like to thank the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Friends Association for kindly donating these seedlings and their ongoing support in the Botanic Gardens.

Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) ‘plantspiration’ challenge

The end of May is usually a time for Botanic Gardens across Australia and New Zealand to celebrate their Botanic Gardens in some way.

We usually celebrate with a Botanic Gardens Day event with guided walks, displays, community group stalls, demonstrations and more.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, events were cancelled. With people in isolation, BGANZ decided to challenge people to share their favourite plant story with others. Some of our staff and volunteers took on the challenge and shared their ‘plantspiration’ stories, from the favourite, weird and wonderful, to the veggies, natives and family heirlooms.

Featured garden – Regional Forests

The Mackay Branch of the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) have a long and continuing involvement in the development of the Botanic Gardens.

The Regional Forests' plantings feature plants in ‘natural’ forest groupings from different plant communities within our local Central Mackay Coast bioregion.

Click here to find out about some of the different plant species highlighted in this area. We encourage you to enjoy a stroll along the pathways that meander through the Regional Forests and find something new each time you visit.

Since 1995 SGAP members have planted many 1000’s of local native species throughout the Regional Forests and hold regular working bees to help enhance and maintain them. Without their ongoing involvement and commitment, this section of the gardens would not be where it is today.

For more information on becoming a part of SGAP, please email npqmacky@gmail.com

Thank you to our volunteers!

Our team at the Botanic Gardens would like to thank our volunteers for their positive action, generosity, compassion and commitment to causes they care about.

Without you, the Botanic Gardens would not be where they are today. We look forward to welcoming our volunteers back sometime in the not too distant future.

Term 2 school holiday activities – Stay tuned!

School holiday activities are not too far away (from June 27), and we are looking forward to seeing families get outdoors to enjoy the gardens with self-guided activities, home craft and more.

Our program will be advertised on our Facebook page, throughout the Botanic Gardens and on our website.

World Bee Day – Recognising our native bees

Bees across the world were recognised on May 20 for World Bee Day.

With more than 20,000 species worldwide, and around 1500 species in Australia, bees are important for many reasons, especially for their role as pollinators for native plants, not to mention the importance of some species as pollinators for agricultural crops that people rely on as part of their everyday living.
