2. Pasture feed budgeting presentation

Livestock producers are now able to watch an Agriculture Victoria pasture feed budgeting presentation online. The one-hour presentation, delivered as a webinar earlier this month, provides practical information and advice about incorporating early pasture into livestock feed budgets.

Veterinary Officer Cathy Bunter said pasture feed budgets help producers to identify the value of the feed they have on-hand in paddocks. Other benefits of completing a pasture feed budget, include:

  • Increased understanding of how to make the most of autumn growth without overgrazing
  • Understanding the importance of soil and plant health of paddocks
  • Knowing the supplementary feed requirements of livestock and how to feed stock efficiently

Dr Bunter’s presentation also covers how to determine the quality and quantity of feed on hand in a paddock, the benefits of a feed test (including best advice on collecting samples) and how to interpret the results. The recording of the ‘Autumn feed budgeting’ webinar / phone seminar can be watched HERE

Similar presentations to help with pasture feeding decisions at this time of year are also available online, including;
• Lisa’s Warn’s presentation on ‘Using soil moisture and temperature data for optimising winter growth’
• Cam Nicholson’s ‘The value of grazing weeds”

These can be found at this page of the Agriculture Victoria website. More information about feed testing can also be found on Agriculture Victoria’s website.

4. Budgeting offers insights

Future Farmers Network directors regularly give their opinion on the latest news, events and issues in agriculture for an article for Australian Community Media. Here’s the most recent yarn from FFN Director Dan Coulthurst. READ THE FULL YARN HERE!

Budget! The one word that can send the toughest of characters running for the hills and make the smartest of operators quiver in their boots. Typically, people hate them.
Why? Well because many people would argue they're a waste of time; "I can't tell the future", "the minute you finish it, it's out of date", "I spend money when I need to spend money and I sell when I need money".

All these are valid arguments, however wouldn't it be nice to have more control over your finances, have an understanding of what you can spend or what you might need to make, be aware of what is going on with your money and be more proactive about financial decisions? A simple budget can do exactly that. A budget can be as in-depth as you would like it to be and done properly, will give you a very good understanding of your financial requirements over any given period.

The severity and intensity of your budgeting is tailored to you and your businesses needs as there is no one-size-fits-all model. Budgets are not and should not be static documents. They should be dynamic, referred to regularly, and most importantly, compared with your actual results.
