Update on HIBS
Saint David's sponsors four children at the Honduras Independence Bilingual School (HIBS). HIBS helps students from poor families in Quimistan, Honduras, achieve a life of independence. In the wake of COVID-19, the already very difficult situation faced by the economically-disadvantaged students and families of HIBS has become even more dire. Hondurans are threatened with six years in prison if someone contracts COVID-19 from them and because people have been unable to work for two months, income to the school has fallen dramatically. Update on the Brooks
Saint David's has a long relationship supporting the efforts of Friendship Place to end homelessness in the DC region. In the wake of the decision to close the 200-family DC General Family Shelter in favor of smaller shelters, the 50-family Brooks shelter opened on April 27 in Ward 3 and Friendship Place was awarded the contract to manage the site. In an update this week, the Director of the Brooks, Catherine Mitchell, noted the generally positive response to the shelter and thanked people for the respect, understanding and support they are extending to their fellow DC residents.
