Hūtia te rito o te harakeke,
Kei whea te komako e kō?
Ka rere ki uta, ka rere ki tai.
Kī mai koe ki a au, he aha te mea nui o te ao?
Māku e kī atu,
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata
If you pluck out the flax shoot,
where will the bellbird sing?
It will fly inland, it will fly seawards.
If you ask me,
What is the most important thing in the world?
I will reply, People! People! People!

Kia ora and welcome to the inaugural edition of ‘The Indicator’

A new monthly newsletter for the Mental Health and Addictions Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Programme designed to keep you informed and connected.

Like the Programme – this newsletter is uniquely yours to own. A space to contribute to this collaborative community, participate in the continuous quality improvement of our services, solve problems, share learning and showcase innovation in action. It’s your platform to highlight how effective data use can transform wellbeing outcomes for tāngata whai ora, whānau and communities.

We appreciate you are responding like never before. The COVID-19 pandemic has required our mental health and addiction workforce to practice differently. To be brave through uncertainty and make rapid bold shifts in how we support people to navigate layers of complexity – balancing how we meet needs today, while anticipating what lies ahead.

For more than a decade the KPI Programme has equipped the sector to take data-informed collective action on some of our most enduring challenges. This practice remains relevant today and over the coming months we will be working with you to deliver more opportunities to engage, take action and expand the reach of the Programme.

A lot has happened over the past two months and there is much more to come for the KPI Programme. We believe the voices of all will compel us forward in the right direction and this edition is filled with opportunities to get involved and help shape the future of the Programme.

So, grab a cuppa and read on to find out how you can share your voice this June….

Share your story: Your standout moment through the COVID-19 response

Let’s acknowledge that while many people ‘stayed home’ for lockdown, you, our essential workforce stepped up, redeployed, rolled up your sleeves and got on with it. You were heroes, responding to keep tāngata whai ora safe using your expertise and the limited resources available to you.

Tenacity and resilience is something to be proud of. We know everyone will have a COVID-19 story. A story of how you, a colleague or a service responded. A moment they felt most proud of during a challenging time.

We would like to honour your experiences by collecting, sharing and celebrating your stories. We'd like to collate the stories of our mental health and addiction COVID-19 response into a video for the sector and present this during our upcoming KPI forums on 18 and 25 June, as well as on our KPI Programme website.

How can I share my story?

There are many ways people like to tell and express stories and we would like yours in the format which feels most comfortable and authentic to you and your service. This could be on video, via a written email, interpretative dance, waiata, haka, painting, poem or any other way your creative mind takes you.
If you would like to provide a video, below are some tips and tricks for filming.

Please send your story in your chosen format to us at info@mhakpi.health.nz, no later than 5pm, Monday 8 June 2020. You can also contact the team via this email if you need support at any time with creating or submitting your story.
Tips for filming:
  • Find a quiet space. The microphone on your phone is generally located on the back, this means it picks up background noise easily.
  • Film in a vertical (portrait) position, avoid rotating to horizontal or landscape position. This will make our job easier when we edit them together.
  • Try to film with the light source in front of your face. A light behind you will cast a shadow on your face.

MHA KPI website and tools refresh

The Mental Health and Addictions KPI Programme website is due to be refreshed. Rather than go ahead and design a site with features and information we think you may like… we want you, the people using it, to tell us what you do and don’t like about the current site and what new features you’d love to see.

Our short survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. Follow the link below.

New whānau engagement indicator now available to view

In late 2019, the Child and Youth leads worked closely with KPI Programme analysts to develop a measure of engagement with whānau.

An initial whānau engagement indicator was presented and endorsed by participants at the Programme’s national forum in December 2019.

This indicator, called "Whānau Contact Frequency", has been loaded and is now available via the national web-based data display tool. (Note, you will need to log in to access the report.)

The purpose of this measure is to better understand how organisations are engaging with whānau, and to identify if this engagement is happening consistently and at the right time. The measure is broken down as follows:
  • Percentage of all whānau contacts that occurred within 14 days of the previous whānau contact (not necessarily within the reporting period)
  • Percentage of whānau contacts that are in the first 6 months of the start of the referral that occurred within 7 days of the previous whānau contact
  • Percentage of whānau contacts that are after 6 months of the start of the referral that occurred within 21 days of the previous whānau contact.
This breakdown helps us to better understand the dynamics of engagement with whānau depending on the length of an episode.

We encourage you to review your data and reflect on how your data relates to other services across New Zealand.

Are you our new Adult Stream lead?

We are seeking expressions of interest for a new representative from Te Waipounamu (South Island) to join the Adult Stream leads group.

If you have a passion for using data to improve service performance, and you are keen to increase your contribution to the KPI Programme through raising the voices and perspectives of our South Island mental health and addiction workforce, we are keen to hear from you.

If you’d like to put in an expression of interest or to find out more, email the team at info@mhakpi.health.nz

Meet the KPI Programme team

On 1 April 2020, the Northern Regional Alliance handed over the baton to Te Pou o te Whakaaro Nui (Te Pou) as the new KPI Programme hosts. Te Pou are excited to have been selected to take on this new role for the next three years.

To ensure the continued momentum of the Programme, a team have come together to support this next chapter.

Introducing Sima Clarke,

I bring an existing knowledge of the mental health and addiction data and information landscape, an ability to coordinate actions of different stakeholder groups and more than 10 years‘ building strong working relationships across the New Zealand public sector.

If you’ve watched the KPI video, you can see we’re well supported by a bunch of very talented and committed people. We share a genuine passion to make services the best they can be for the people and whānau who use them. We all look forward to collaborating with our KPI stakeholders, NGOs, tāngata whai ora, whānau and rangatahi to achieve this.
We hope you enjoyed your inaugural mental health and addictions KPI newsletter ‘The Indicator’. If you’d like to showcase your KPI stories, share the great work of your teams or even write a brief opinion piece, we’d love to hear from you at info@mhakpi.health.nz.
