Dear MS 54 Families,
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month - a chance to celebrate the contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to our shared history and culture.
In celebration of APA Heritage Month, Asian American students at MS 54 put together grade-wide activities and videos to educate their fellow peers on Asian American culture, identity, and history. You can support their work by following them at @aaazn54 or by watching their YouTube videos:
We encourage you to watch and discuss these videos with your families, and stay tuned for more in the coming weeks!
It is also a timely opportunity for the entire MS 54 community to speak out against a rising trend of bias and hate crimes towards Asian Americans, including in our own community. If you are interested in learning more about how to combat Asian American discrimination and harassment, Hollaback! is partnering with Asian Americans Advancing Justice to offer free, online bystander intervention and de-escalation trainings. While the COVID-19 crisis limits opportunities for in-person cultural events and celebrations, a wealth of engaging resources are available online for you and your families to learn more about Asian Pacific American history and culture. Here are just a few examples below:
