Hey y'all,

Does anyone else feel a little 🥴 about everything reopening? I'm so excited to support our local businesses again (and reprise my old rituals likely Sunday brunch (miss you, Desoto) and evening yoga classes at Asheville Community Yoga), but I, like so many folks the world over, feel more than a little nervous about reentering the public sphere after two-plus months in quarantine.

The fact of that discomfort only makes me more grateful to live where we do. The efforts of our community to contain coronavirus are evident in the numbers, and with broad efforts like the Asheville Cares - Stay Safe Pledge and the individual choices of small businesses to stay closed or open intentionally, I'm confident we'll continue to weather this storm honorably and intelligently—even as we step out into the rain. ☔️

Till next week,

NEWSWORTHY
ASAP is connecting fresh farm food to those who need it most via their Appalachian Farms Feeding Families program. Photo courtesy ASAP
  • STEM Craft 🧵 Center for Craft has announced three Materials-Based Research Grant recipients that feature collaboration between craft and the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Projects include the adaptation of knitting as a user-friendly fabrication approach for crafting on-skin interfaces (Exploring Opportunities for Knitting and Morphing Second Skin), inventing environmentally responsive embellishment methods for textile (Response Patterns), and inventing a “soft” screen made entirely from natural ancient materials (Soft Monitor).

  • Tourism Recovery Grants  💸 Applications for the Buncombe County Tourism Jobs Recovery Fund Grants are due by Sunday (May 31) at 11:59 p.m. To recap: these grants are designed to preserve and safely reopen the region’s unique small business ecosystem and protect tourism-related jobs. The Tourism Fund helps tourism-related small businesses and nonprofit organizations reopen through micro-grants of $500–5,000 and full grants of $5,001–50,000. Learn more and apply for a full or micro-grant.

  • Farms to Fams  🥕  ASAP's Appalachian Farms Feeding Families program will deliver fresh, healthy food to people who need it while also fairly compensating farmers. Through this new initiative, ASAP will facilitate direct connections between farms and relief efforts like food banks across the region. After assessing food relief sites’ needs, ASAP will contract with a farm or farms to supply the food. The first phase of the project will focus on rural communities, which are further away from centralized food resources. Learn more
