JUNE 2020

A Note from Jane

Sonoco is well known in South Carolina and around the world for recycling paper into new products. So, we naturally appreciate paper in every form. Recently, National Geographic featured this story of 40,000 years of London’s history made entirely of paper. Enjoy the history and creativity.

Send me pictures of creative projects from upcycled paper that you or your students have made.

Education Director, Sonoco Recycling

Environmental Education Programs

SC Green Step Schools
Congratulations to Green Step Educators who persisted through all the challenges this school year to sustain their Green Step projects. Mentor reports are due June 1, and award winners will be announced in July.
Green Ribbon Schools
Two South Carolina schools, Furman University and Cape Romain Environmental Education Charter School (CREECS), have been selected as U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools. Access the press release on the awards here, and read more about the
the program on the SCDHEC Green Ribbon webpage or the USDE Green Ribbon webpage. Last year, Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences was the first school in South Carolina to receive this recognition.
The program recognizes schools that reduce environmental impacts, teach environmental education and promote health and wellness.

If your school is interested in applying for this recognition, contact Sam Christmus at SC DHEC’s Bureau of Air Quality.
Champions of the Environment
Champions is seeking input for how to structure and modify the program for the next school year and wants ideas from teachers about what new materials or supplies would be helpful to support at-home environmental learning. Contact Amanda Ley leyah@dhec.sc.gov with your suggestions.
