Gallery Re-Opening!
Tentative Opening Date is Tuesday, June 16th!
Our tentative operating hours will be 11 – 3 and we will be open Tuesday through Saturday.
Masks will be required for all visitors and we will have some disposable masks available if you don't have your own. In addition, one of our members (Karen Miller) will have wonderful cloth masks for sale. (Karen is part of the Corvallis Sewing Brigade, a group that has made over 24,000 masks to date.) We encourage people to use the hand sanitizer station at the door.  The number of customers in the Gallery will be limited to no more than 8 at a time, with a couple being counted as one person. This is to help maintain social distancing. For the time being, our restrooms will be closed to the public.

We have a new credit card system that should make things faster and will not require a signature on the tablet device. This will help keep things cleaner when you are making your purchases. In addition, we will be cleaning touched surfaces, such as the sales desk after each transaction.

Featured Artists for June, 2020
Bill Thompson and John Mikkelson

June 2 - July 25

First Friday Virtual Reception, June 5

Starting at 6:00PM
John Mikkelson, Louvered Candle Holder in Walnut
John Mikkelson is the newest member of Gallery Calapooia. He joined us in March, just when we had to shut down due to the pandemic! Luckily, John stuck with us through this down time and is one of our featured artists for the months of June/July. You will be able to see his work in the Virtual Reception on June 5. And then when the Gallery opens again on June 16 you can see his beautifully crafted wood pieces in person.

John spent a career in the Marine Corps and Reserves after graduating from Oregon State University in 1990, returning here in 2004. Since that time he has operated a custom woodworking and cabinetry business, and spent the past six years as professional faculty at the College of Forestry at OSU. Now he has returned to creating beauty from wood full-time, working from his home shop in North Albany. He specializes in making boxes, using a wide variety of woods and an ever-growing range of designs, from simple to ornate. One of the details he particularly enjoys including in his boxes, is a construction technique that results in grain that matches around all four corners of the box; you’ll have to come in sometime and see in person just how nice that looks. (And maybe wonder how it’s done!)

John also seeks out beautiful local/native woods from local small business suppliers, both to feature and support our region, and to reduce the carbon footprint in his works. Not one to discard beautiful wood, John experiments with ways to use even the smallest of pieces, which you’ll see reflected in his selections at Gallery Calapooia. He strives for clean, classic designs, fine craftsmanship, and finishes that feel as good as they look. An accomplished furniture designer/maker, John is also looking forward to featuring new pieces at the gallery, so stay tuned for that!

Bill Thompson had prepared a new body of work for the Gallery when he was going to be one of April's Featured Artists. He titled this new series: “Parts of a Bigger Picture”. He says that working with vinyl artwork has some major drawbacks that has prevented him from making the larger pieces that he wanted to do. As the size of the vinyl images increase, the accurate cutting, weeding and registration of the individual layers increases as well. So he began to experiment with combining smaller images to make a larger statement on the wall. He started with the concept of the old-fashioned jig-saw puzzle, but this quickly evolved into using multi-sized wood panels, each containing a small “part”, which, when bolted or doweled together, created “a bigger picture”.

Bill Thompson, "Walkies"
Of this piece Bill says: This was created in one of my crazy “quarantine moments”. It’s not for sale as I intend to donate it to ADA/Park-wise – although I will add it to my featured artist display for June/July . It was based on a thought that Robert Zuniga , our downtown parking custodian, would have little to do once we all stayed home with our cars so a little “multi-tasking” may be the order of the day. Hence “Walkies”, within my theme “Parts of the bigger picture”.

Until Further Notice
All Face-to-Face First Friday Receptions Have Been Cancelled

However, we will continue to have Virtual First Fridays!

On June 5, Gallery members Linda Herd and Lori Garcy will host a Virtual Tour of the Gallery.  They will show the work of our Featured Artists and also the other new works that our members have created. You can go to our Facebook page to view the tour as it is happening, or you can see it on the FB page later.

What I did on my Corona Virus Staycation Part 2!

Marjorie Kinch

When Life Comes Full Circle
You ask what has been happening to Gallery Calapooia artists during Covid-19?  Lots of time for art, right!  Not for this poor artist as not only are we dealing with being very cautious with the virus, we were in the middle of moving to a different house.  They call it downsizing when you give up over 500 sq. ft.  When you are an artist it is just plain being silly to do this.  Even after plenty of days to find places for things, this detail has not happened!

I did decide to do some art for myself when I realized that I had to or I might be even more unhappy about staying home day after day and having no art to show for it.  So this story starts with finding out about Zoom and that our daughter was going to teach a class on speed painting, finish one painting in one hour and thirty minutes.  This was going to be using acrylic paints with which I have very little experience with, let alone at not just a jog, but a full out run.

Many years back this same daughter got her Graphic Design degree at LBCC and during that time she took a watercolor class from me that I was teaching at LBCC.  My slow methodical method is to do layers over layers of watercolor, changing colors or not, and go at a snail’s pace.

So here I am many years later, taking a class from her, on Zoom.  Maybe Zoom is why the lesson seemed to fly by with paint on the canvas, the walls, the table and on my clothes!

I now understand acrylic a bit better and the good news is our daughter is a good teacher.  However, I prefer watercolor and always will.  It isn’t as likely to get on the walls!
