June 2020

The Family Room is an organization that values diversity, equity and justice.  We actively work to cultivate an environment that is inclusive of everyone who walks through our doors and toward building a community that respects each other's differences in color, language, economic status, sexual orientation and backgrounds.  We work toward educating our staff to to be culturally aware, sensitive and to approach others from a place of compassion and understanding as best we can.

That being said, we still have not done enough to impact the systemic racism that negatively affects those with whom we work.  We have not done enough to ensure that our leadership, our board of directors and our staff, reflect those who we serve.   We have been actively developing a process to address the racism we see even within our walls.  We are now committed to reviewing our mission and vision to better serve our community in these ways.  We will search for staff and leadership that represent our families more accurately and we will commit to partner with other organizations to build a larger, more equitable community and combat racial injustices to help heal our community.

Announcements
A huge transition is happening at the board level as we say goodbye to Sophia Donforth, Meg Mclaughlin and Suzy Finnefrock. Without their vision, skills, and dedication it is quite probable that the Family Room would not exist today.  Thank you for your time and energy. We will miss you!

We are excited to welcome Kristine Foley as our new board president.  Thank you, Kristine! See a note from her, below:

First off, I want to take a moment to echo Jackie's words of thanks to our departing board members. Since the first days when The Family Room began the transition to a stand-alone organization I have watched Sophia, Suzy and Meg commit untold quantities of time, energy, attention and passion to ensure the future of The Family Room. Without their deep dedication The Family Room would not be in the strong, solid position it is in now. From every corner of my heart, and those of many others, Thank You.

My children and I joined The Family Room family in 2016 during Family Play. In 2018 I volunteered with the Preschool Playground Committee, which led to joining the Board in 2019. I am deeply honored to have been elected to serve as the new Board Chair. Sophia has done amazing work in support of the Family Room's mission, and has left quite a legacy in her wake. I will strive to follow in her footsteps as we take the next steps towards The Family Room's future.

When I describe The Family Room to people, one of the first adjectives I use is “diverse.” I see this beauty in all the other mothers and caregivers I met in Strong Families, in the smiling faces of my son's friends in the Preschool Program, in the overflowing tables and happy, full bellies at Family Supper. But, Josh is correct, we have not done enough to address issues of equity and inclusion at the organizational level. The Board has made strong efforts to address this disconnect, such as working to make the time commitment of Board membership more tenable, and creating the Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Committee in February 2020. Unfortunately, as with so many aspects of life, COVID disrupted planned workshops and placed additional burdens on people's available time and energies.

Please rest assured that despite these set-backs The Family Room and The Family Room Board are actively working to do our part to address systemic racism, and to ensure that we truly reflect and represent those we serve, so that we can serve you the best we can. I want The Family Room to continue to be a community leader in creating and maintaining a safe, nurturing space for all families and young children, and am committed to working for and with you to achieve this goal.

Family Room Wish Lists
Children and staff gathered at the Garden last summer, trying to catch a butterfly.  This summer, gatherings like this have not been able to happen but we are still providing technical garden support as well as family support in the great outdoors where families can access all of the benefits of nature and wildlife.

"I've been thinking about the Family Room a lot during all of this pandemic stuff. I really feel lucky that I had the Family Room when my children were younger, and was able to access what I needed. I really feel for all of the families who really need that community now more than ever. But I am so grateful for what we've gotten," Family Room alumni.
