View this email in your browser
Calgary is a great place to make a living and make a life. Planning & Development is continuing to support our local economy and the aspirations of landowners by processing planning applications and building permits. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are adapting how we conduct our day-to-day work. We are still open for business, with a focus on great service for our customers and building great communities together.

Case Managers offer one point of contact for business owners

In response to the changing business environment due to COVID-19, The City has introduced a single point of contact for business owners. The Case Manager will assist and support businesses (new and existing) in getting expedited answers on questions and ideas you may have about operating your new or adapted business model during the pandemic.

The Case Manager will coordinate with City experts to help you understand any planning, safety codes and licensing requirements that need to be addressed prior to moving forward. The role is meant to provide you with timely and customized guidance to support Calgary’s business community.

COVID businessrelief@calgary.ca is a new email address created for you to directly submit inquiries on business adjustments as a result of COVID-19.

Temporary outdoor patios offer expanded business space

Earlier this month, City Council unanimously approved the COVID-19 relief package to support temporary outdoor patios.

Food establishments like restaurants, cafes and pubs can use a temporary patio to extend onto adjacent public road right-of-way by placing tables and chairs on a sidewalk. Establishments are required to acknowledge several conditions within the temporary permission, including protecting pedestrian accessibility, insurance, indemnification, Alberta Health and Occupational Health and Safety.

The use of outdoor space is one way to enable more physical distance for both patrons and staff.

How to apply
  1. Call Planning & Development at 403-268-5311 or speak with us through live chat.
  2. Talk to our Community Planning team. They will help you determine if you need a development permit or a temporary permission.
You need a temporary permission if:
  • The patio is on a road or right-of-way (public property)
  • The patio is on public land (City-owned)
You need a development permit if:
  • The patio is on private property such as a parking lot
Both temporary permission and a development permit are required if the patio will straddle private and public property. Retailers may temporarily use a sidewalk for occasions such as a sidewalk sale, under the Land Use bylaw, and are not required to apply for either temporary permission or a development permit.

Fees
Temporary permission - fee is waived
Development permit - $898*

*The development permit fee for an outdoor patio is subject to the fee deferral package. In this case, it would include a 25% payment up front and the remaining 75% at time of decision.

Choosing a location
When considering if a temporary patio will work for your location, check whether you can maintain pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Existing patio
If you have an existing patio, the patio approval is permanent and does not need to be renewed.
