From the Rector

Grace and peace to you.

This Sunday we commemorate Pentecost. In many ways, the story of disciples speaking while others hear in their own languages is a reversal of the division of humanity described in the tale of the tower of Babel. In Pentecost, the Spirit unites all and is available to all.

This week's news delivered once again stories of racism and its deadly effects. While we want to see changes in public policy, I believe that the depth of this work has to be in healing and transforming our minds. I say "our" because we all suffer ingrained prejudices. Some folks at St. James have been exploring ways we can talk about racism and transformation. I hope we can begin some conversations soon. I also hope that we can pray, listen, and act in ways bring healing for us all.

We will celebrate Pentecost online. Wear red and be open to the Spirit. We will celebrate that the Spirit is bringing us together and we will lament the division among us.

The committee to consider reopening will meet next week. We will take our time as we consider how to safely gather.

Thank you for all the ministry, giving, praying, and supporting one another that you are doing.

Peace,
John Mark
