ENGAGING COMMUNITIES REMOTELY: ADDRESSING BARRIERS TO ACCESSIBILITY

A Gathering by Neighbourhood Arts Ottawa
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, community engaged-artists have been devising new ways of bringing communities together in remote time and place. For some, these virtual channels for participatory art-making have made programming accessible where it wouldn’t have been before. For others, these changes present new barriers to participation, amplifying and compounding existing ones. What resources, tools and processes can artists build into their practice to better address access barriers, including how to help mitigate learning curves associated with shifting to digital platforms?

NEW SONG FROM MENTORSHIP PROGRAM PARTICIPANT TO BE RELEASED THIS FRIDAY
"Trophy Wife", the new single from Ottawa singer-songwriter Marie-Clo's forthcoming album Shell(e), will be released on all streaming platforms Friday May 22nd.
Marie-Clo began her artistic career on stages worldwide performing in musicals, but honed in soon thereafter on her true passion project, music. She is currently promoting the first of three EP’s which will make up her full-length english album entitled Shell(e). A conceptual feminist narrative, it is slated to be fully released in 2021, produced by Polaris shortlisted drummer/producer Olivier Fairfield (Fet Nat, Timber Timbre, Leif Vollebek), with the support of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), Canada Council for the Arts, and FACTOR.

PARTNERING APART
Deadline: May 31, 2020
Have you ever encountered another artist and thought, “Hmm, I’d love to work with that person sometime!” but then been too busy/stressed/broke/focused on something else to make it happen? Or been curious about how your movement practice would change if you worked with a ceramicist/D.J./ scientist/circus artist/fashion designer? Partnering Apart is Kinetic Studio’s way of keeping collaboration alive and fostering new relationships in this time of physical distancing. We invite self-identifying movement/dance artists to submit proposals for the creation of 3-5 minute pieces that are created by two individuals who have never worked together before.
If selected, artist projects will be completed by the artists, submitted on video, and incorporated into Kinetic’s 2020-2021 season. During physical distancing, Kinetic will launch each artistic collaboration on its website and social media platforms. Once physical distancing limitations are over, videos will be shown at Kinetic Studio events.
Each programmed artist will receive an honorarium of $250.

Avez-vous déjà rencontré un.e autre artiste, et pensé : « j’aimerais bien collaborer avec cette personne-là un jour!», mais votre calendrier se remplit peu à peu, vous êtes trop stressé.e /endebté.e / concentré.e sur autre chose pour démarrer le projet? Vous demandez-vous parfois si votre pratique artistique changerait si vous collaboriez avec un.e artiste céramiste / DJ / scientifique / artiste de cirque / créateur ou créatrice de mode?
Kinetic studio présente Partenariat (À Part) - une plateforme digitale qui sert à encourager la collaboration et nouer des nouveaux liens lors des mesures d’isolement social. Nous invitons toute personne qui s’auto-identifie en tant qu’interprète en danse/mouvement à créer et soumettre un projet de 3 à 5 minutes. Le projet doit être créé par deux personnes qui n’ont jamais travaillé ensemble auparavant.
Les mesures d’isolement social font que les projets soumis et choisis seront initialement diffusés en ligne, sur notre site web et sur nos réseaux sociaux. Une fois que la distanciation sociale sera soulevée, les vidéos seront aussi présentés live lors de la saison 2020-21 de Kinetic Studio.
Chaque artiste sélectionné.e recevra un cachet de 250$.

CBC POETRY PRIZE
Deadline: May 31, 2020
You have until May 31 at 11:59 p.m. ET to submit your original, unpublished poem or collection of poems.
The winner will receive $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, have the opportunity to attend a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and have their work published on CBC Books.

CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS – DIGITAL ORIGINALS MICRO INNOVATION GRANTS
Deadline: June 15, 2020
The Canada Council for the Arts and CBC/Radio-Canada are teaming up once again, this time to launch Digital Originals, a new fast forward initiative to help artists, arts groups and organizations pivot their work for online sharing.
Artists, groups or organizations can either adapt their existing work or create a new work for digital dissemination to the Canadian public during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Digital Originals offers a $5,000 micro innovation grant from the Canada Council.
Funded projects will be housed on a dedicated CBC/Radio-Canada website. In addition, CBC/Radio-Canada will feature selected projects for showcase on at least one of its digital CBC/Radio-Canada platforms.
Selected projects for the curated CBC-Radio/Canada showcase will receive a supplemental amount of $1000.
CONSEIL DES ARTS DU CANADA – CONNEXION CRÉATION MICROSUBVENTIONS POUR L’INNOVATION

Le Conseil des arts du Canada et CBC/Radio-Canada font équipe une fois de plus pour lancer Connexion création, une nouvelle initiative accélératrice qui vise à aider les artistes, les groupes et les organismes artistiques à orienter leur création vers le partage en ligne.
Les artistes, groupes et organismes peuvent soit adapter des œuvres existantes, soit créer de nouvelles œuvres pour les diffuser de façon numérique au public canadien durant la pandémie de la COVID-19.
Connexion création offre des microsubventions pour l’innovation de 5 000 $, versées par le Conseil des arts du Canada.
Les projets financés seront hébergés sur un site web de CBC/Radio-Canada prévu à cet effet. De plus, CBC/Radio-Canada sélectionnera des projets qui seront mis en vedette dans au moins une de ses plateformes numériques.
Les candidats dont les projets ont été retenus pour cette présentation spéciale de CBC/Radio-Canada recevront une somme supplémentaire de 1 000 $.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS FOR ART ON THE FARM
With a great deal of hope and optimism, we have opened vendor registration for our popular summer Art on the Farm event, and we invite YOU to be hopeful and optimistic with us! Interested artists will find our registration package for this year's Art on the Farm event here.
Art on the Farm is held every year at the Dominion Arboretum, just behind Building 72 at the Central Experimental Farm. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., RAIN or SHINE.
Please do not send your registration fee at this time. Arrangements for payment will made when we have confirmation our event can take place. But do send your completed registration form by email to info@friendsofthefarm.ca, as our ability to retrieve regular mail is extremely limited at this time.

CULTURAL FUNDING JUROR APPLICATION
The Cultural Funding Support Unit is always looking for community members with expertise in arts, heritage and culture to sit on our juries. The Cultural Funding Support Unit uses a peer assessment model in our evaluation process that involves professionals with recognized expertise who are active within their cultural community. When we select jurors, we strive to create a balanced representation of diversity: diversity of disciplines, of official languages, gender, geographic areas and culture-specific communities.

L'Unité du soutien au financement culturel est toujours à la recherche de membres de la communauté possédant une expertise dans les domaines des arts, du patrimoine et de la culture pour siéger à ses jurys. Pour notre processus, l'Unité du soutien au financement culturel utilise un modèle d’évaluation par les pairs qui fait appel à des professionnels avec des compétences et des connaissances reconnues et qui sont actifs de la communauté culturelle locale. Lorsque nous sélectionnons les membres d’un jury, nous visons à créer une représentation diversifiée : avec une diversité de discipline, des langues officielles, des genres, des secteurs géographiques et des communautés culturelles.

BRUCE POTTER COLLABORATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
Take two pictures, one in doors and one outdoors that reflect something about yourself and the current isolation situation. Some of us are loving it. Some not so much. Share the pictures to this email, bpotter@salusottawa.org. If you wish, send in a two sentence introduction of yourself and/or a two or three sentence comment to go with your pictures. If you don’t want to write a self description or comment on the pictures, don’t worry about it. Just send the pictures along.
We will collect the pictures and create a slide show and put it up on The Creative Café website.
Here are some guidelines that keep things safe and respectful.
Stay Safe
o Don’t take any risks.
o Don’t go anywhere you wouldn’t usually go, or do anything you wouldn’t usually do.
o Take a friend if you want to..
o Be aware of what’s around you.
Be Respectful
o Always ask first, even if this means missing the perfect shot.
o You must have permission before taking pictures of people.
o Remember, the goal is to connect with others and share ideas.
Large Crowds, Landscape or Scenery
o You do not need a Release Form if people are too small to be recognizable.
o It is still a good idea to ask permission before taking a picture
of private property (someone’s house or yard, for example).
For Pictures with People
o Be especially careful when taking pictures of children. Talk to the parents first.
o Do not take pictures of people who are “in private”, such as through a window into their home.
o Ask yourself, “Would I mind if someone took a picture of me in this situation?”
o Remember to offer the person a copy of the picture. You can do this by encouraging them to go to the Creative Café website.

OTTAWA MUSIC DEVELOPMENT FUND: OMIC COVID-19 RELIEF FUND 2020
As part of the Ottawa Music Strategy, the City of Ottawa and OMIC’s Ottawa Music Development Fund (OMDF) seeks to address the gaps and challenges in Ottawa’s music ecosystem. This year’s OMDF funding is specifically focused on addressing the challenges resulting from COVID-19. In partnership with the City of Ottawa, OMIC is announcing the Ottawa Music Development Covid-19 Relief Fund of $25,000 towards the following projects as part Ottawa’s efforts to assist with the ‘restart’ efforts for the local music industry.
FONDS DE DÉVELOPPEMENT DE LA MUSIQUE D'OTTAWA : FONDS D'URGENCE CIMO COVID-19 2020
Dans le cadre de la Stratégie musicale d’Ottawa, la Ville d’Ottawa et le Fonds de développement musical d’Ottawa (FDMO) cherchent à combler les lacunes et les défis de l’écosystème musical d’Ottawa. Le financement du FDMO de cette année est spécifiquement axé sur la résolution des problèmes résultant de COVID-19. En partenariat avec la Ville d’Ottawa, la CIMO est fier d’annoncer la mise sur pieds du Fonds d’urgence COVID-19 d’un montant de 25 000 $ pour contribuer aux efforts de « redémarrage » de l’industrie musicale locale.

CULTURE OUTAOUAIS PRÉSENTE LE DOCUMENT LA CULTURE EN OUTAOUAIS : UN SECTEUR D'ACTIVITÉS MAJEURS POUR L'ÉCONOMIE RÉGIONALE
Le rôle de la culture dans le développement économique régional
En pleine pandémie de COVID-19, conscient des impacts que cette crise a sur le milieu culturel, que les effets négatifs vont perdurer, Culture Outaouais réaffirme l'importance de le soutenir et présente le document La culture en Outaouais : un secteur d’activités majeurs pour l’économie régionale.
Il s’agit d’une synthèse des principaux constats tirés d’une étude des retombées économiques de la culture dans la région de l’Outaouais réalisée par l’Observatoire du développement de l’Outaouais (ODO) à la demande de Culture Outaouais. Les données qui en découlent à l’appui, Culture Outaouais souhaite mettre à l’avant-plan l’apport de la culture dans une perspective de reprise et poursuivre la réflexion qui vise à favoriser le plein essor d’une société créative, innovante et prospère (en référence à Partout la culture, Politique culturelle du Québec).

ACFO OTTAWA | BILINGUAL OTTAWA GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR NOT-FOR-PROFITS AND SMALL BUSINESSES

ACFO Ottawa is proud to launch the second round of its microgrant program Bilingual Ottawa, funded by the Government of Canada. The submission period will be open next week, from May 25 to June 30, 2020. With this second round, ACFO Ottawa is offering grants of up to $ 10,000 to help organizations and businesses of Ottawa to offer a bilingual experience to Ottavians. Training on the grant application process will be offered on May 25 at 2 p.m. in French and at 3:30 p.m. in English.

The Event Safety Alliance Reopening Guide is a collective work by event industry professionals to help our peers who are planning to reopen during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This document contains no “best practices” that apply everywhere – coronavirus creates different challenges depending on countless factors, including the size of the event, its geographic location, the physical space, and the anticipated attendees, to name just a few. Instead, in the order one would plan an event, we have identified reasonably foreseeable health risks and suggested options to mitigate them.

ORKIDSTRA PRESENTS: TEACHING ARTISTS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ONLINE SERIES
As Teaching Artists, we are constantly flexing our creativity muscles to adapt and change our craft to reach our students in these current and challenging times. To help you grow your practice, OrKidstra presents the Teaching Artist Professional Development Online Series, a FREE monthly workshop series where special guests from across Canada’s El Sistema inspired programs will share their expertise, passion and tools for engaging students in this new digital format.
Hosted by OrKidstra, these free, 90-minute training sessions on the third Tuesday of every month will be an opportunity for music educators from all backgrounds to come together and grow the excellence of their craft while continuing to empower kids through music. More workshop topics and presenters coming soon – stay tuned!
