Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told the disciples to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon them. On that day called Pentecost, which came 50 days after Easter, all the followers of Jesus were together in one room in Jerusalem. They had come to celebrate the Pentecost holiday and the spring harvest.
When these followers of Jesus had gathered, they suddenly heard something like “the rush of a violent wind.” As they looked around, they saw something resembling a flame over each person’s head. When they finally discovered their voice, what came out of their mouths was not what they expected to say. Each one was speaking in a different language, and each of them in that language began to tell about the amazing things that God had done through Jesus Christ.
The early church grew because they were empowered by the Holy Spirit. They were out there healing the sick, feeding the hungry, sharing their resources with the needy, and witnessing to people in a language they could understand.
Could it be that the Holy Spirit wants to do the same thing with this faith community? Who knows what will happen when the Holy Spirit gets a hold of us? You are invited to join us for worship this Sunday as we celebrate the Festival of Pentecost and the vital gift of the Holy Spirit. We will be delighted by your presence.
