“No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks.” St. Ambrose

Principal Corner

This will be the final weekly newsletter for the school year. To put closure to the year, we must reflect back to all the success we have accomplished this year.  This year didn’t exactly end the way we all expected when we started this year building our school culture with the Happiness Advantage.  A core concept with being orange and showing your happiness on a daily basis is to show appreciation and gratitude.  We have accomplished so much this school year in our learning journey and how we instruct students from a distance, never even a thought before this year began.  Our staff rose to the challenge and led with confidence to instruct students through a new platform. I am extremely proud and honored to work alongside such an amazing group of educators. Throughout this unique time period, we lost many experiences with students and staff, but we gained a new purpose as we head into summer.  We can accomplish anything through collaboration and determination to approach the new reality that we face each day!

Now is the time to disconnect from your device and enjoy your summer ahead!  Stay safe and healthy this summer.  Relax and enjoy the summer ahead.  Good luck to those who are leaving the Westwood family… You will be greatly missed and I appreciate your contributions this year to strengthen our community.

Be well and I look forward to connecting with each of you personally over the next week.

Admin Intern Report
As the school year comes to a close I want to again express my appreciation for the Westwood staff. You are all INCREDIBLE!!! The way this group has come together to support one another, students, and families is something I feel so fortunate to have been a part of. Westwood truly is a special community and I thank you for welcoming me this past school year. I will miss you all, but know our paths will cross again and for that I am grateful! Enjoy your upcoming time off. Take some time away from those screens! You have truly earned it! Best wishes to each of you!

Goodbye Signs for Students
As an option, we invite teams or individuals to create “Goodbye” signs for students to be displayed during 5th Grade Graduation and Device Return next week. We will place signs outside during these events along with some balloons and other decorations. Again, this is optional but we wanted to provide staff an additional opportunity to send their well wishes to our Westwood Wildcats.

Screening Procedures-Next Week
Our nursing staff will be present in the building next week on Tuesday and Wednesday to screen staff when coming into the building.  They will be screening from 7:45-3:00 both days next week. Be prepared to socially distance and have a mask with you when you enter the building. Nursing staff will also be present on Thursday/Friday to screen non-licensed staff coming into the building for device return.

Year End Procedures/Classroom Work Time
Teachers have the option to come into the building on May 26th and 27th to work in their rooms.  You can come in during the instructional time period to pack up your room for the summer. These two days can be used along with June 1st to finish up any work in your classroom and closing up any loose ends.  Abby has sent you a list of items that need to get accomplished before leave for the summer.  If you aren’t returning to Westwood next year, please see me before checking out. If you get everything completed by next week, then you won’t need to be in the building on June 1st.

Grading Third Trimester
The elementary report card grading window will be ready for teachers to begin entering grades on May 21st. Please let teachers know that 4,3,2 = Meets and 1 = Does Not Meet. Teachers will need to enter an M, D or NA whichever is applicable on the report card. All areas of the report card will have a mark.  Grades should be completed by June 1st, before you leave for the summer. Specialists will have grades completed by Monday, May 25th.  Please let Abby know once you are completed and she will print off a copy of your report cards for  you to put in the cum files.

5th Grade Graduation
Our 5th Grade teachers and staff will be honoring out 5th grade students on Wednesday, May 26th from 1:00-3:00.  The students will take part in a parade and receive a diploma that day.  Please come out to support our 5th graders that day!!!

Student Device Drop Off
Families will be dropping off devices on May 28th and May 29th.  We will be designing a schedule to help support device drop off that day.  More information to come with details on device drop off.  Parents will receive communication on Monday.  Times for device drop off will be: May 28th (12:00-7:00) and May 29th (8:00-4:00)

Attendance
Teachers are not responsible for taking attendance on May 28th and 29th.  THe last day to take student attendance will be on May 26th. The last day to push out assignments is Wednesday, May 27th.  Students will be working on choice boards the following two days.

Academic Coach

Difficult to see, always in motion is the future. Yoda.

This is a hard message to write. We don’t really need another “word of wisdom” or “piece of advice” to read about. Yet, this baby Yoda meme and quote struck home. We have been in such unpredictable roles this year. The future is uncertain, yet doesn’t stop. Let us take all that we have learned, the lessons of coming together and becoming that village to raise our children forward with us. The days of reflecting on what really matters and being able to stay in our jammies, sip our coffee a little more slowly. We have gone so far at becoming who we’ve always said we are this year. I can’t wait to see what the future brings. Thanks for letting me into your rooms, your lives, your meets. Until we see each other again;

Health, Happiness, and Hope,

Melissa
