EMJS PAC Update
May 25, 2020

Upcoming events for your calendar
  • May 25-29: Virtual Walk and Wheel Week
  • May 28: PAC Annual General Meeting via Zoom, 7:30pm
  • June 1: Back-to-school week begins; Grade 5 photo book deadline
  • June 26: Administrative day (no school) - Summer holidays begin
SD61 approved the school calendar for the 2020/21 school year. You can find the list of Pro-D days and other school closure dates here: https://www.sd61.bc.ca/news-events/calendars/2020-2021-school-year-calendar/ *The calendar is subject to change due to COVID-19
Please attend our AGM on May 28th (on Zoom)
  • We hope you can join us for our AGM this Thursday, May 28th at 7:30pm - on Zoom. In order to attend, please register herehttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsceCorzssEtbSrV_BVRIRDqaYe3_ifeNC
    • A phone-in option is available for those without internet access
    • The agenda for the AGM is available here.

  • At the AGM, we will review next year's proposed budget and calendar, and vote in a new PAC Executive. A number of key Executive positions will be vacated by PAC executive members at the end of this year including Chair, Co-secretary, and Co-treasurer, and we will be losing the parent coordinator for our Hot Lunches, website and other behind-the-scenes tasks. We welcome any new parents interested in taking on one of these roles!
    • It is important to know these positions are flexible and adaptable to one’s skills and interests and no experience is necessary!
    • If we are unable to fill these positions, we are in jeopardy of not being able to apply for grant funding, organize community events or support programming for EMJS students like chess and Science Venture, among others.
    • More information on the PAC Executive roles is available here.

  • In addition to voting for the PAC Executive, the proposed budget and calendar, we will also vote on proposed changes (small ones!) to the PAC constitution. You can review the suggested amendments here (orange highlighting):  https://emjs.hotlunches.net/admin/view-doc.php?dnum=10341
  • We held our first Zoom PAC meeting on April 23rd. Minutes are available here: https://emjs.hotlunches.net/admin/view-doc.php?dnum=10332
Virtual Walk & Wheel Week
  • We hope you and your child(ren) can participate in our virtual Walk and Wheel Week starting today, May 25! Below are some examples of activities for each day of this week.
    • Motivation Monday: Set a goal for the number of days and minutes you will bike and/or walk each day this week! Or use some sidewalk chalk to share some motivational messages about being active on your sidewalk.
    • Take the Helmet Test Tuesday: Does your helmet fit properly? Watch this short video to find out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyhyrITHDgw. Or follow the instructions in the images below. You can also do the ABC (Air, Brakes, Chain) quick check on your bike before you ride.
    • Walking & Wheeling Wednesday: Go for a walk or a ride with your family and talk about the benefits of walking and wheeling for your health and our environment.
    • Traffic Safety Thursday: Go for a walk or ride around your neighbourhood and try this Neighbourhood Safety Scavenger Hunt from the CRD.
    • Fancy Friday: Put on a costume and go for a walk or wheel, or decorate your bike or scooter. Send us a photo!

  • Your child can enter our draw for 1 of 6 gift certificates to Oak Bay Bikes simply by emailing us at comms@emjspac.ca and letting us know what they like about walking or wheeling (biking, scooting, roller blading). One entry per child each day. Photos of walking and wheeling activities are also welcome! We will do the draw at 5pm on Friday, May 29th and notify the winners by email.

  • For great family bike ride ideas and the chance to win great prizes, check out the Oak Bay and Victoria Scavenger Hunts organized by the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition & the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society: https://gvcc.bc.ca/theme-rides/scavenger-hunts/
Grade 5 Class of 2020 Photo book
A reminder to grade 5 families that parents are putting together a book for the grade 5 class this week. Grade 5 families are asked to please complete the following by June 1:
Saying good-bye to Mr. Johnson
  • As you may know, Mr. Johnson is moving to Lake Hill Elementary next year, and we will have a new principal, Mr. James Hansen.

  • We are very grateful to Mr. Johnson for all that he has done for our school for the last 6 years, and he will be missed by many!

  • Since we won't likely be able to say good-bye in person (at least in big groups of people!), we welcome you and your children to contribute to this online group card that can be accessed here: https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/gLy30Xab

    • You can choose to just enter text, or you can add a photo or a short video from your child(ren). A sample entry is provided on the 'kudoboard'.
    • If possible, please add your message before June 23

Support our Hot Lunch suppliers
On behalf of our regular hot lunch suppliers who have had their business affected by the pandemic... You can support these local businesses at this time:
  • The Milk Run - would you like to have Island Farms milk, eggs and other products regularly delivered to your home every week? The cost includes a markup to cover delivery but may help you reduce the number of trips you must make to the store and only needs to be set up once compared with online grocery shopping. They deliver all Island Farms products https://www.islandfarms.com/en/products plus eggs and iogo yogurt in a 16x100ml variety pack (strawberry, vanilla, cherry, raspberry). Call 250-658-0666 for information on booking if you are in Downtown, James Bay and Fairfield. Contact Oak Bay Dairy 250-544-1875 if you are in Oak Bay or Fernwood.
  • White Spot - the Fort street location is open for takeout and delivery!
  • Hot House Pizza - open for business every day from 11:30am to 8:00pm and provide pick-up, delivery, and pizza by the slice options.
Local online resources
What are some easy ways you can help raise funds for the PAC during the COVID-19 crisis?
  • Coming soon...Monk school supply kits! We will be setting up online ordering for next year's school supplies with our partner Monk Office.  Stay tuned for details.
  • Your EMJS Thrifty Foods Smile Card can be loaded every time you shop and Thrifty Foods generously donates 5% of what you load on the card back to our school to fund an infrastructure project of our school's choosing. We continue to fundraise for a gym projector that has been high on the school's wishlist ($6000). Every little bit helps!
  • Load up your EMJS Fairway Market Community Card and use it at Fairway Markets the same way as the Smile Card.
  • Next time you buy kids' shoes at Finn & Izzy on Oak Bay Avenue, mention EMJS and they will donate a portion of the sale (>$50) to the PAC.
  • When buying bread at Cobs Bread on Oak Bay Avenue, tell them you have a “Dough Raiser” account under the name “Margaret Jenkins”.
  • Do you have lots of bottles/cans that need recycling? Before your bottle returns are processed at any Return-It Bottle Depot location, let the attendant know you would like the payout to go to “École Margaret Jenkins PAC”.
