Labor & Workforce Development Agency

Update for May 23, 2020

A Message from Secretary Julie A. Su:

Our California workforce includes many who served our country who now serve as public servants in state or local government. They came home and joined the workforce as civilians while some in their ranks never had a chance to see their loved ones again. I thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They are in my thoughts this weekend as are their families.

This week, we also honored Harvey Milk in our state, and this month, we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month across the country. These are occasions to embrace the great diversity that is California—diversity that I am so proud to have represented in my team at the Labor & Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) and throughout our departments.

To do right by all our communities in California—whether my team is investigating a workplace safety complaint, assisting an employer to maintain high road jobs during this time, allocating funds for worker training and re-employment, providing unemployment benefits, or creating videos for worker outreach—LWDA continues to come together, to push ourselves, to innovate to find the best ideas, evaluate our work, and provide stronger support for those impacted by COVID-19, especially those who, even before this crisis, were most marginalized by the inequities in our economy.

COVID-19 Infection Prevention for Agricultural Workers Video – Published May 20, 2020
The video and
checklists developed by Cal/OSHA are intended to help agricultural employers implement their plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace. Please note: This guidance does not introduce any new legal obligations, but because COVID-19 is widespread in the community, employers operating agricultural worksites in California must consider the disease a workplace hazard and employers must take steps to update their safety procedures to include preventing the spread of COVID-19. YouTube English (Video Transcript)

FYI: Industry guidance to reduce risk

California moved into Stage 2 of modifying the state’s Stay-at-Home order on May 8, 2020. Our progress in achieving key public health metrics will allow a gradual re-opening of California’s economy.

We recognize the impact of economic hardship. We must get our economy roaring once again and put paychecks in people’s pockets. But the risk of COVID-19 infection is still real for all Californians and continues to be fatal.

The state is
issuing guidance for businesses to follow if they’re permitted to open per County Public Health rules.
