Hello travellers,
I should be in Bali!
If it weren't for Covid-19, I would be in Bali now, probably relaxing and planning where we would stay eat, and visit in Vienna, Edinburgh and London.
Instead, I'm 'Zooming' my British friends, and my mates in Byron Bay. Oh well.

What happened last week?
Lets start by acknowledging the terrible tragedy for those on the Pakistan International Airlines Airbus that crashed outside of Karachi, killing 97, and possibly more on the ground. Miraculously there were 2 survivors, who are now hospitalised.
Other than that, Britain closed its borders to most International travellers, requiring arrivals to go into quarantine.
Air New Zealand has slashed three members of its executive team, in line with its expectation that the airline will be about 70% of its former self.
There are some sobering thoughts from scientists about the health risks of long haul travel, and you can read how Qantas - to put it bluntly is putting economics before passenger safety - in my opinion.

What's coming up?
Doubtless, there will be some more jockeying for position by the parties hoping to rescue Virgin Australia.
I'll try to flesh out some more hotel reviews and flights from my trip to South America and keep you up to date on other developments in the travel industries.
You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .
Happy (fantasy)Travels,
Stephen

If you arrive in the United Kingdom from 8 June you will need to supply personal contact details, including an address for self-isolation. If you are caught breaching the 14 day quarantine period, then you will need to pony up for a £1,000 (AUS$1860 ish) fine. Priti Patel the Home Secretary who made the announcement, […]

Is it safe to get on a plane? With Qantas and other airlines announcing revised procedures before boarding and in the air, many starting in June, I began to get excited about the possibility of flying again until I read this in The Guardian Australia: ‘The infectious disease expert and epidemiology professor Marylouise McLaws told […]

This is an entirely gratuitous post to tell you that I was scheduled to be spending 10 days in Bali now, having retdeemed business class airfares on a Qantas A330 Sydney to Denpasar return. I even got Qantas to change my original redemption that involved a return leg via Melbourne. At my request, they managed […]

Qantas has announced the ‘Fly Well‘ program, which is not about making flying safer, but just . . . ‘. . . a series of wellbeing improvements to give peace-of-mind in preparation for domestic travel restrictions easing.’ QANTAS GROUP, Media release, 19 May 2020 So they are not even pretending that these initiatives will make […]

Although flights are operating in Australia between the state capitals, and to regional centres, there are restrictions on who can travel, and if you cross some state borders, you will need to go into self imposed quarantine. Background At various dates from April 2020, some Australian states imposed restrictions on those arriving from interstate. This […]

Thai Airways was not in a good state before the COVID-19 pandemic. It has seen a cycle of losses and bailouts for some years now, and five years ago the government said it was the last time. Well maybe not. The Thai Government a few weeks ago was talking another bailout, but only if the […]

Apparently, there was plenty of midnight oil burnt over the last weekend, especially by the Virgin Australia administrators from Deloitte. Like in Masterchef, or perhaps more appropriately, Ru Paul’s Drag Race (Shantay, you stay!), there are four moving onto the finals – that is the second round, with final bids due on 12 June – […]
