'Piece' Practice

Part of enjoying a clear space involves being mindful of what's in it. Here's a wonderful practice in gratitude and appreciation for what you have. (And a wake up call for what isn’t working for you.) How to: start with one wall, one table or one shelf. Spend a moment reflecting on each piece displayed. How long have you had it? Where were you when you got it? Was it a gift? Send the giver a virtual thanks. Did you make it? Give yourself a hug for being creative. Continue this practice with each item in every room of your home. Furniture, artwork, rugs ...  and don’t rush it - enjoy the journey and savor the stirring of memories. Important: Each piece should make you smile. If not, let it go. The more mindful we are of what we have, the better able we are to enjoy life with less. Finishing tip: This is a good time to tape a note to the back or inside of each piece indicating any special info to share with whomever enjoys it next.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?

Speaking of practice, this is a simple action that never fails to lift my day - sometimes very sweetly and sometimes more deeply. Here’s how: Imagine someone special at your table. Someone from your past or your present. It can be (and often is) a repeat guest. Over tea or a meal, have a conversation. It’s basically talking aloud to yourself but imagining your guest is listening. It doesn’t have to be heavy stuff. It is, however, a perfect time to get things off your plate. What’s troubling you? Are you upset about something? Air whatever you want. There’s no judgement here. Last week I laughed with my friend, Corine, and reminisced about metaphysical studies. Yesterday, I grumbled with my Mom about the challenges of aging. Both of them are at peace on another plane but the conversation was real and rewarding. Now especially seems a good time to remember: we are never alone. So, who will be your first guest?

LOVE PACKS

Now that Spring is here, I’ve replaced the gloves and scarves with packs of tea, tissues and cough drops. Stored behind my passenger seat, the bags are easy to dispense whenever I meet someone asking for a handout. I like including bagged tea because it's easy to just drop into a water bottle and enjoy sun tea. No stove needed. I also sometimes include travel toothpaste and/or wet wipes. Tips: Avoid anything that might melt. Even if you're wearing a mask, be sure to give with a smile and a thumbs up!
APS - MAKING IT MATTER

This is wonderful resource available in most counties across the country. Adult Protection Services is the agency you call if you witness an elderly person being abused or neglected. They also address self-neglect situations - cases where an elderly person is alone and unable to care for themselves. Calls and shared information are confidential. An intake number is assigned and appropriate action taken depending on the situation. Please don’t hesitate to call your local APS with questions or concerns. Click here to access the NAPS map and find the contact in your area.

Pandemic days - if ever there was a time to want more space in your home this would be it. Keeping your house clear and clutter free is first and foremost THE best way to make wherever you are feel more spacious. Once that’s done, invite the outside in by adding a screen door. Best $35 I have ever spent!  Being able to have my balcony door open, hear the birds, hear the rain and feel the breeze is such a luxury. Extending my space through the screen connects me to the community outside … kind of like having a yard. Best part? I can just close the door whenever that leaf blower kicks in.

This is my birthday week and I'm enjoying the breeze as I write this. Sharing virtual hugs and smiles with all of you. Grateful, as always for the generosity of loved ones and the honor of being able to share the journey ... and the laughter.
