What matters for the success of youth employment programmes in Africa

Dear reader,

Not the number of jobs, but the quality of jobs generated and a deep understanding of the context matter. Four evidence synthesis papers developed within the ‘Boosting decent employment for Africa’s youth’ research initiative reveal insights into the challenges and successes of current youth employment programmes. The takeaways cover: job creation by private sector development interventions, a recipe for successful interventions addressing the barriers faced by young women in the labour market, and the link between decent employment and peacebuilding. Read Connecting the dots: results of the evidence synthesis on youth employment programmes in Africa for more.

Hit hard, but fighting back

Education, employment, entrepreneurship, and engagement – the COVID-19 pandemic poses additional challenges to each of these for Africa’s already vulnerable youth population. A series of news items explores how differing groups of youth are being affected, and how different actors are working to help young people build their livelihoods and have their rights and voices heard, both during and after the crisis.

Kind regards,
