More on the program
Interviewing Nils Torvald, Member of the European Parliament

Nils Torvalds, member of the European Parliament since 2012. Mr Torvalds has been actively endorsing the circular bioeconomy, and he is part of the studio team that will be hosting the event live stream from Ruka, Finland on 10th September.
1. As there are already some signals, that various parts of the world begin to get back to some form of normality after the crisis caused by Covid-19, what do you see as the main focus points in order to ensure a smooth recovery?

That is, indeed, an interesting question. If you take look at the figures of how the virus has reaped its deadly harvest, there are some very interesting tendencies. If the there is a general trust in what the national governments are doing, citizens seem to accept the measures and do apply them in a fairly effective way. And trust is also, as we all know, something getting the economy go around. From this follows a basic rule: The more trust, the smoother the recovery.

2. In your opinion, where does the Circular Bioeconomy fit into this recovery and what positive role can it play into a future post Covid-19 world?

During the last few weeks, I have been preaching green recovery! Why? We are making a lot of new debt. That means that the coming generations are going to pay for what we now are forced to spend. I think it would be a moral imperative to, at least make a real effort to spare the coming generations from uncontrollable climate change. And it would be slightly stupid to invest in structures of the past. So that’s where the bioeconomy comes in!

3. The World Bioeconomy Forum, coming live from Ruka in September, is already gaining a lot of attention globally, what are your expectations in regards to the event this year?

When I took my first fights as a newcomer in the European Parliament, there was a fairly skeptical, not to say negative, attitude towards bioeconomy and climate issues. During the last few years there has been a tremendous change of attitudes. The World Bioeconomy Forum will give us - despite the challenges due to Covid-19 - a huge opportunity to feel the change and set new and bold goals for the future.
