In Memoriam: Tony "Morse" Bridgeman

It is with great sadness that we have to report another member of the Nomadic family lost to the club, writes Club President Greg Neesham.

Club secretary Tony Bridgeman passed away suddenly on June 7 after a long fight with heart complications.

Tony was a larger-than-life member of the club since joining from local rivals Hampton Court nearly 20 years ago. Before that he had played for Kingston Workmen for many years, but left and set up Hampton Court CC all by himself.

He used to enjoy his games against the Nomads, and when it was time to move on, the Nomads were his natural choice.

Tony had many club nicknames, starting off as Bridge and ending up as Morse, although it could have been Stonewall Jackson due to the obstinate nature of his batting.

With the normal Nomads “feast or famine” style of batting, it was reassuring to have Tony close one end down, while others who can't be named tried to blast every ball to Teddington High Street.  He also made the fielding position of Silly Mid Off his own. While not the nimblest of fielders he always tried to get something in the way of the ball receiving an impressive array of cuts, bumps and bruises in the process. Injuries even coming from his own team on one notable occasion when he received a cricket ball to the back of the head from a team mate who subsequently earned the nickname of the Assassin!

His main strength was as an administrator, I don't believe we ever had a better club secretary.  But his crowning achievement was suggesting and organising the hugely successful diamond jubilee tour to Estonia in 2006, when fittingly he played perhaps his best innings for the club.

A fastidious keeper of records, he almost single-handedly rewrote the club's constitution last year. When we were looking for photos to accompany this article, there were not many of Tony, because he was behind the camera taking all the good ones.

He leaves behind his wife Sara, children Nick and Julia and a lot of friends at the Nomads.

RIP Morse.  Tony Bridgeman: Nomad.
