WORDS OF COMFORT & ENCOURAGEMENT

CONNECTING OUR EPWORTH CHURCH FAMILY THROUGH DAILY DEVOTIONS

Submitted by John Shepherd

King James is not the version that I read every day.  Good News, Common English, NIV and any number of others are easier for me to understand, but you can’t do better than the KJV for beauty.

With the whole world more or less trying to find a new normal, I have had more time to reflect, study and absorb my daily Bible reading.  When I was asked to help with a second round of this astoundingly wonderful daily devotional that arrives in my in-box each day, the scripture below came immediately to mind.

Psalm 1 King James Version (KJV)
1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

I do not meet these standards, but I aspire to them.  I am taking more time now with letting God’s word speak to me.  You may have heard this in one form or another, but it is a vivid word picture for me:  “Prayer is when we talk to God; meditation is when we listen for God to talk to us”.

This passage is poetic, picturesque and beautiful as a rose.  As we gradually emerge from our quarantine, I aspire to live out the vision of this passage, to take more time to listen to God and to meditate more intently on His word.

Our Father, thank you for the blessings of new insight and understanding even in the midst of trial.  Help us to be fruitful with our time and talents so we may be a blessing to others as you have blessed us.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen
