2nd Issue May 2020

Editorial

Yes we have postponed our General Conference "Solidarity, Peace and Social Justice", jointly organised with the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), to July 2021. Despite this decision, however, some of the planned sessions will be available online over the coming weeks as part of the new EADI/ISS webinar series. And we are hiring - and are proud to present our 2019 annual report, as well as two new articles on our blog. As for today's publication picks, the thematic focus lies on food and agriculture and on the Latin American continent. As our members continue to publish on the COVID19 pandemic, please find the latest collection here. A chronological overview of members' open webinars is at the very bottom, together with the calls and vacancies. Enjoy the read!

EADI/ISS Webinar Series "Solidarity, Peace and Social Justice"
The EU’s development policy is being strategically adjusting to respond to the shifting challenges of the international order. In doing so it is argued that this is undermining the EU’s core normative commitment to development. This work-in-progress-seminar by "The European Union as a Development Actor" Working Group approaches the topic by exploring the extent to which the shift to ‘partnership’ in EU development rhetoric is a break with the past? The webinar will discuss two papers to enable early career or PhD students to receive feedback on their work. Colleagues are invited to join and participate in the spirit of providing constructive and supportive feedback. Read more and register
A vibrant civil society enhances solidarity, social justice, and peace. However, opportunities to act for social change within civil societies are limited in many ways. Solidarity networks function in a way that might counter the conventional conceptualizations of civil society in Western scholarship. The panel explores elaboration of local conceptualizations of civil society and development with focus on authoritarian, conflict affected and fragile contexts characterized by lack or diminishing of democratic state-civil society relationships. Accepted papers for the proposed conference panel on the topic will be presented and discussed. The webinar is open to all interested audience. Read more and register

EADI Annual Report 2019
Apart from our regular annual and ongoing activities, the publication of the volume "Building Development Studies for the New Millennium" was among EADI's main achievements in 2019: a "mapping exercise" of what Development Studies has to offer to face the great challenges of our time. Setting this in relation to the current COVID19 pandemic, Executive Secretary Susanne von Itter writes "Agency is needed here. "Back to “normal” is not possible, but a “new normal” should not be the least common denominator, but a strong impetus to critically reflect on long established processes and entrenched behaviours. Development Studies has a role to play here" View the report
New on our Blog
From Science to Practice: Strengthening Research Uptake to Achieve the SDGs: Although the need for evidence-based policy making informed by rigorous scientific research has never been greater, "research often fails to find its way into policy-making circles due to a number of technical, normative, cultural, political, institutional and financial barriers."  In this post, UNRISD's Maggie Carter explores ways to bridge the science-policy divide. Digitalizing Agriculture in Africa: Promises and Risks of an Emerging Trend: These emerging technologies have become more recognised in Africa as a contribution to food security, poverty reduction and sustainability. But they are no panacea, write Fabio Gatti and Oane Visser in the latest post of the EADI/ISS conference series: "We need to be aware of the risk that digital agriculture – when implemented without critical debate – might primarily benefit tech companies and multinational input providers, rather than smallholders or the environment."
