GAO Report Recommends that CMS Provide Beneficiaries with Additional Information on SUD Coverage

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report recommending that Medicare include explicit information on covered services for beneficiaries with substance use disorders (SUD) in the Medicare & You publication. Read more.

Data-Driven Justice Approach in King County, Washington, Creating a Human Services Response

In 2014, the Washington State Legislature passed SB 6312, which mandated that each regional service area of the state must provide mental health services, chemical dependency services, and medical care services to Medicaid clients under a fully integrated managed care health system, by 2020. To develop data-driven responses by more fully understanding the needs of the high-utilizer population, King County substantially enhanced its cross-sector data sharing and analysis capabilities. A broad interdisciplinary approach that recognizes how adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic heighten suicide risk was outlined by the International COVID-19 Suicide Prevention Research Collaboration and released online in Lancet Psychiatry. Read more.

AHRQ Statistical Brief Notes Increase in Hospital Inpatient Stays Related to Opioid Use Disorder and Endocarditis

A statistical brief recently published by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) examined hospital inpatient stays related to opioid use disorder (OUD) and endocarditis, an inflammation of the heart valves from bacteria or fungi that can enter the body through a variety of mechanisms, including intravenous drug use. Exposure to Steroids in the Womb Linked to Long-Term Risk of Mental, Behavioral Disorders

Corticosteroids, when taken by a pregnant woman at high risk of delivering a premature infant, can help accelerate infant lung development and reduce the risk of respiratory distress syndrome, systemic infections, and death. However, such exposure may also come with long-term risks of mental and behavioral disorders in these children, particularly if they are ultimately full term, suggests a study published in JAMA. Psychotic Symptoms Found to Be Associated With Suicide Attempts in Patients With First-Episode MDD

Just under 10% of patients having a first episode of major depressive disorder (MDD) also experience psychotic symptoms, according to a report in Depression and Anxiety. Read more.

Five Actions to Promote Well-Being of Health Care Workers During, After COVID-19

Organizations must act to protect the health and well-being of health care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic—now and in the future, wrote the leaders of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience in an article in The New England Journal of Medicine.
