Online Learning with LVGH

As you all know, LVGH had to close our Literacy Centers at the outbreak of COVID-19. We remain closed in an effort to do our part to contain this pandemic, but each day we continue to work to transform and expand the ways we are able to reach our students.

What started as sharing resources on Facebook and sending individual emails has grown into offering video-call career counseling and regularly scheduled Zoom classes for all literacy levels. We are so proud of and grateful to our tutors and students alike for their patience, flexibility, and dedication.

A Community Comes Together
Sodexo Students Meet Rising Demands of Free Meal Program

For many years now, LVGH’s Career Pathways Program has found a beneficial pairing between students and community members in our twice weekly community dinners. The students in our Sodexo food services job training program learn culinary skills by preparing and serving free meals each Tuesday and Thursday night at our East Hartford location, New Covenant United Methodist Church. In turn, members of the community are able to come together to enjoy a free meal.

Though these community meals look much different now, it is the one LVGH program that has persisted, and even grown, through the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, given the rise in financial insecurity caused by the pandemic, the demand for these free meals- which are now being served to-go style- is higher than ever. Our students used to serve an average of 50-75 meals each night. Since March, that number has multiplied to about 150 meals served per night, twice a week, with the demand continuing to grow each time.

It is a bittersweet statistic to note; while we’re saddened to see the increase in food insecurity our community members are experiencing, we’re so proud of these students for stepping up and providing for their community in this time of need. Thank you to our students and to Sodexo, FoodShare and New Covenant United Methodist Church for their hard work and commitment to these, now more meaningful than ever, community dinners.

Fiscal Year End
Your Support Means Everything

As we wrap up the 2019-2020 fiscal year, we want to sincerely thank everyone who generously donated to Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford. We've seen many ups, downs, and changes throughout our 48 years of advancing this mission, but the one constant has always been your support. For that, we are so grateful.

As you can imagine, these past few months have been like no other time in our organization's history. Your gift is particularly powerful and appreciated as we navigate through this pandemic while trying to remain a dependable resource in our students' lives. Thank you.

Why I Tutor
What It Means To Be A Literacy Volunteer

"I was initially attracted to LVGH because I am a helper and I like to help people be comfortable in their world, in understanding, speaking, reading, writing. I do that week in and week out at LVGH. It is wonderful! What has been the real joy, however, is the people I have met and befriended – so kind, so interesting, so courageous. I may walk into that beautiful historic building every week under the role of teacher, but I learn so much from students and staff. I am so inspired and so much richer in mind and heart when I walk out. I so look forward to being with my “teachers” soon!" -Marcia, ESOL tutor since 2016
