Summer Care Package for your Mental Health

Hello Students,

It is summer, but not just any summer: Global Pandemic Summer. This is a very hard time. We see those in our community who are carrying more direct grief, instability, marginalization, and fear, while acknowledging that all of us have been significantly impacted by this global situation. Your mental health may need some extra attending to this summer. Hamre Center for Health and Wellness is sending you this Summer Care Package for your Mental Health to help provide some support, tools, and resources. Mental Health is not one-size fits all. We hope you’ll find something amongst this list that will help you care for yourself, your friends/family, and your community.

#1

Develop new resilience tools.

Explore our recent resilience challenge that provides eight unique research-based practices developed by the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. These practices aim to help us improve our social and emotional well-being - particularly needed during this pandemic. These practices are small, digestible ways to create your own building blocks to resilience and well-being.

#2

Practice Vulnerability by taking the How Are You Really? Challenge, co-sponsored by the Steve Fund, an organization dedicated to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of students of Color.

#3

Get some help with your daily routine.

Routine is very helpful for mental health. Whether it’s accountability from a friend, your google calendar, or maybe trying Habitica, a free app that Gamefy’s your daily routine, we all need extra support to find and stick to a routine right now.

#4

Stay Connected to Macalester: Virtual Community and Wellness Website.

The Division of Student Affairs Virtual Community and Wellness Site was created during spring’s remote learning to ensure that students could access the services, programs, and the familiarity of the Mac community. You’ll find all sorts of concrete resources here.

#6

(Re)Assess your Substance Use

We all cope with life stressors in different ways: we binge-watch shows, we go for walks, we eat chocolate, we talk with friends, we cry, we use substances. Some of these coping strategies, while reducing psychological pain in the short term, don’t help us over time. Do you wonder if your substance use (whether it’s alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs) is causing things to happen in your life that you did not intend or want? You can assess your own use with the following three tools.

ScreenU Alcohol

ScreenU Marijuana

ScreenU Rx

Explore Our Summer App Recommendation: Nod

Our featured app for this summer is Nod - an app that empowers students to build social connections. As counterintuitive as it might seem, Nod uses strategies backed by science to empower students to build the authentic connections they want and need to be successful in college. The app’s mission: Reduce the impact of loneliness on young people's well-being.
