Northwestern Medicine healthcare workers recently began to enroll in the Healthcare Worker Exposure Response & Outcomes (HERO) Registry. The registry invites all U.S. healthcare workers to share clinical and life experiences in order to understand the perspectives and problems faced by those on the COVID-19 pandemic front lines.
The registry will unite America’s healthcare workers into a community to facilitate rapid-cycle research, including an upcoming large study of hydroxychloroquine’s effectiveness in preventing coronavirus infections in healthcare workers. The HERO research program leverages PCORnet®, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, and is funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). As a network of PCORnet, the Chicago Area Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Network (CAPriCORN) will play a vital role in contributing to the Chicago area efforts of the registry and trial. Faraz Ahmad, MD, MS, a member of IPHAM's Center for Health Information Partnerships (CHIP), will lead the Northwestern Medicine site along with Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) Jay Pandit, MD, and Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) Amisha Wallia, MD.

Tara Lagu, MD, MPH, the new named director of IPHAM's Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research, co-authored a perspective piece in the Washington Post.
"States, health systems and hospitals can make some short-term efforts to help stabilize the existing supply chain — for instance, they could work together to collect and report inventory, regionalize resources and coordinate their distribution. But without a strong federal response, we are likely to continue witnessing 'Wild West' scenarios as health systems struggle to procure needed supplies. And worse, we will continue to see states and health systems lacking the resources they need to protect patients and health-care workers."

Tricia Pendergrast, a first-year student, helped start GetMePPEChicago, a collaboration amongst students attending several medical schools in Chicago. The organization has already distributed more than 60,000 N95 protective masks and other protective personal equipment to healthcare workers around Chicago.
Now, Pendergrast is looking to the future, securing two grants to continue operations and develop an algorithm for equitable distribution of personal protective equipment.
