Midweek Update - May 27, 2020

We are the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus — in the heart of Orlando.

... and then something changes

It was 27 years ago, before the arrival of the first Green child, and one of the few pieces truly helpful parenting of advice I’ve received through the years came from my sister, Stacy. Stacy and her husband were one year ahead of Peg and me when it came to starting a family, and her advice to me was this: “With parenting, as soon as you get used to something and think you’ve got it figured out, it’s then that something changes.”

Perhaps the same is true of a global pandemic that bringa social distancing measures that change life-as-we-knew-it in ways that we could have never anticipated: As soon as we think we’ve figured out what the “new normal” might be, then something changes.

And all of that can be rather unnerving. If we can’t have consistency, we at least want to be able to anticipate to some degree what we could expect (even if that would mean “expecting the unexpected”). It has been 76 days since COVID-19 was classified as a global pandemic, and it is unlikely anyone on this earth can tell us what the “new normal” in life ultimately will be, just as few will be able to pinpoint the when, the moment that it ultimately all shakes out.

So a bit of good news is needed, something (or, more specifically, some deep and abiding Spirit-filled truths) that help us frame life more from God’s perspective. After all, this is His “Can you hear me now” moment for all the world.

  • None of us ever did really know what the future could hold, but God always has.

  • None of us has ever had a hold on the future (as if we could control it), yet God owns it all, every moment in creation and eternity as well.

  • “God is love.” (1 John 4:16)

  • “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:9)

  • “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi 3:6)

  • “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews13:8)

We take refuge in the Lord and are filled with confidence and expectant hope in Him, the One who will never change, whose love will never die, whose power can never be diminished. Even when life-as-we-once-knew-it seems to be so far gone, we can be sure that the Lord is ever near. He will continue to lead us and guide us and keep us as He helps us navigate the way to the “new normal,” whatever that may be.

Volunteers Needed for Preparation & Distribution

We at Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz Food Pantry are committed to protecting and serving vulnerable populations. Since there are individuals and families in our community affected by the loss of income associated with the shutting down of businesses, we know the need is more critical now than ever.

To minimize the risk of any transmission of sickness, there will be special procedures implemented for the distribution that will stress social distancing and minimize all contact. All guests will be instructed to stay in their cars for distribution and the food will be placed in their trunks. Those who walk up (people that do not have cars) to the distribution will also practice social distancing.

We need volunteers for the preparation on Thursday, May 28 and for the distribution on Saturday, May 30. All volunteers must be healthy, without preexisting conditions or risk factors which would make them susceptible to the coronavirus.

IN-PERSON Volunteer Roles: taking bags of food to a guest's vehicles, helping direct traffic in and out of our campus, and taking required information from guests upon arrival.

AT-HOME Volunteer Roles: join us in PRAYER for this important event on our campus. Through the food pantry we are able to reach to and provide for MANY people in need.

If you are able to assist, please email foodpantry@poporlando.com

As we plan to resume in-person worship services, we are looking for volunteers to assist with our Worshiping in Safety program. Our plan is based on recommendations from the Orlando Police Department seminar that was held on our campus earlier this year as well as input from the safety committee which includes several law enforcement officers.

It is our plan to have 2 or 3 people serving for each service, they will be scheduled as they are available throughout each month on a schedule. In order to fill a full schedule, we need at least 10-12 people per service to rotate through each month.

The volunteers would serve to keep our worshipers safe through vigilance in prevention. Their primary job would be watching for anything unusual and notifying administration or proper authorities in order to prevent unsafe incidents from occurring on campus.

We need both men and women to serve, no experience is required, training will be provided. The only requirement is the desire to maintain a safe worship environment.

If you would like to serve please email staff@poporlando.com
