Dear friends and partners,

Today, the LA Unified Board met publicly for a virtual meeting—an important act of transparency that I have been pushing for as we discuss the future for our district, families, and school communities.

From the outset of this crisis, we made a commitment to continue to meet the needs of our students, families, and employees—and I’m proud of the work we have done to transition to online learning, provide more than 20 million meals, and invest in bridging the digital divide.

But today’s meeting was not just about our efforts during this crisis, it brought the budgetary realities for LA Unified’s future into sharp relief. It’s clear that we are going to have difficult choices ahead. As one of the thousands of LAUSD teachers laid off after the 2008 recession, I’m committed to finding more creative, student-centered solutions to get through this present crisis. And I’m hopeful we can do it without laying off a single teacher or school employee and while continuing to invest in the recovery of our school communities.

Because we’re all in this together, apart.

The Latest News from LA Unified
Students have a constitutional right to a public education, and during this crisis, that right is contingent on reliable internet access. That's why we joined five other districts across the state to send a letter to legislative leaders with a plan to provide all California students with universal access to free high-speed internet.

An expanded menu of summer learning opportunities will be available at no cost to every LAUSD student this summer, from foundational basics to exciting new enrichment programs, starting on June 24th. Sign your kids up today!

Staying connected from a distance
Nothing can replace a typical day of school visits, parent meetings, and community events, but I'm thankful to have been able to transition so many of these important conversations online to check in with our families, educators, and school communities, including: Venice HS, Toluca Lake EEC, WISH ES, Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, Hollywood HS, WESM HS, Woodland Hills Academy, Taft HS, Stoner Ave ES, Alonzo CDS, and celebrating Westchester teachers at this year's virtual Eddy Awards!
I also had the chance to help STEM Academy staff distribute lawn signs to their graduating seniors. As we all try to find the best ways to celebrate our students’ accomplishments under such unprecedented circumstances, we are working with our school communities to make sure that every student gets the recognition they deserve, even if it has to be from a safe social distance for now.
Join us this Wednesday at 4:30p PDT for our latest virtual conversation: "Supporting Students with Mild to Moderate Disabilities." You can submit questions ahead of time here.
And this Friday, our virtual cooking class is back by popular demand! Evelen Gurguis, the LAUSD coffee cake expert and cafeteria manager at Marina del Rey MS joins me again, this time to make LAUSD chalupas! Join us on Facebook live this Friday at 4:30p PDT!
And you can catch up on all our past conversations and activities here, including an expert lesson on how to make the famous LAUSD coffee cake at home
Saying "thank you" this Classified Employee Appreciation Week!
It's Classified Employee Appreciation Week, and this year, more than ever, we owe a debt of gratitude to our classified employees on the front lines, keeping our facilities clean and safe, and making sure our families still have access to meals during this crisis, and so much more! Thank you!
Student Spotlight: Making Masks at Stanley Mosk
These medical workers on the frontline are showing off the great work of one of our own Stankley Mosk ES 5th graders! This student figured out a way to make the goggles more comfortable for health care workers and is sewing the headbands herself to donate to local hospitals. Her innovation and commitment to others is an inspiration to us all!

Help us support students who no longer have the benefit of being in school every day: LAUSD started this fund with community partners to help provide meals and urgently needed supplies, provide devices, digital libraries, and books, and help students to continue learning. You can also donate here to help families with the basics, like rent, food, and childcare.
All LAUSD Grab and Go centers are open M-F 8a-11a. The Palms Middle School site was recently relocated to Webster Middle School. You can find all the site from LAUSD and our charter partners (all serving all families) here. 👇🏼
