Online "Play and Learn" - Make your own musical instrument

11-11:30am on Wednesday, May 20

We are partnering up with UBC Camps to present a 30-minute session on "make your own music instrument" on Wednesday. Join PHAS graduate student Alex May to learn the physics behind musical instruments, and make your own. The session will be appropriate for children who are 6-8 years old; sessions are free.

Join by visiting the "play and learn" website at 11am on Wednesday!

Build your own musical instrument!

Now till May 27
Part of "Phenomenal Physics &Astronomy...at Home" activity series

Every two weeks, the Outreach Program will be sharing a new physics & astronomy hands-on activity for students to do from home. This week, the activity is "build a musical instrument." Each activity page consists of a general introduction, summaries of physics concepts, videos, and online experiment simulations to support students’ learning experience. All ages are welcome to join! Learn about the physics behind sound and music - vibration, frequency, resonance, and more - and how you can build your own instrument.

Between now and May 27, physicists will be available to answer questions about building a musical instrument (ask the physicists!). We will also share submitted creations (pictures, videos, and more) on our website and through social media (including our new Instagram account)!

Visit the activity series website for more information. The next two activities are about astronomy - stay tuned!

#PHASRubeGoldberg submissions

We had some incredible submissions for our previous "Phenomenal Physics & Astronomy...at Home" challenge! Check out #PHASRubeGoldberg devices on YouTube and learn how these participants use physics in their machines.

Want to join now? All resources are still available on our website, and we will continue to share submitted creations and answer your physics questions about building a Rube Goldberg device.

Visit the Rube Goldberg activity page for more information.

Participate in BC/Yukon Virtual Science Fair

Registration Deadline: May 31, 2020

The BCVSF provides inquisitive students in Grades 4-12 with feedback on their work, and provides Project Interviews with experienced mentors. Submit a project by May 31st, 2020! All projects will be entered into a draw to win prizes, and projects may be selected for media interviews.

For more information or to register, visit the Virtual Science Fair website.

Online activity feature: Beaty@Home Live
