Sunday we come together in the name of our Creating God, who calls us to be a blessing to one another and to the whole wide world.
On this Sunday particularly, during Memorial Day weekend, we remember and commemorate – we recall and honor; memorialize.
We open ourselves to reminders from our past, memories and the lessons of the people and events of our history.
Our collective memories are long – memories of war and peace, sacrifice and loss, and homecoming.
Our personal memories embroider them all.
Together, we will work to remember well and carefully, so that we may find a fruitful way forward, following a path that unfolds as we go.

See you from the sanctuary,
Pastor Chris

MN UMC - Building Use - Update

Friends: last Sunday morning during worship we announced that we will not be meeting in person again until at least Rally Sunday. This decision, proposed by the pastor and approved by the Leadership Council was made after thoughtful consideration and prayer. This decision grants us the gift of knowing right now that we can put our energies into planning our summer, rather than wondering what will become possible - or not. As always, our guiding principle has been to embrace our strengths and resources as we make decisions that center on the well being for all people. We will continue to have online worship each Sunday and explore new and innovative ways to gather as community.

The Minnesota UMC Annual Conference has outlined a phased Re-Gathering plan to guide all churches as we continue to navigate through the pandemic, coinciding with the latest COVID-19 response plan announced by Gov. Tim Walz.
The Conference recommendations are driven by John Wesley's foundational calling:
  • We are a people that do no harm. We practice physical distancing to minimize harm to others, especially the vulnerable.
  • We are a people that do all the good we can. We care for the spiritual and physical needs of each other and of our neighbors, providing information, physical and emotional support, and supporting our health care system and the people within it.
  • We are a people that stay in love with God. When we love God through prayer, praise, and worship, we grow in love of our neighbor. Love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. And God is everywhere and always where we are.
From the earliest days of the crisis, we have stood firm that United Methodist faith communities can and must be first responders in caring for the spiritual, physical and mental health of all of God’s people across Minnesota.

In a pastoral letter released earlier today, Bishop Bruce Ough provides an overview of the Conference Re-Gathering plan and his vision for the road ahead. You can read the full text of Bishop Ough’s letter HERE, which also contains a link to the complete Re-Gathering Plan. As the excerpts below underscore, Bishop Ough is fully committed to a path that will lead us to a bright future:

“So, my friends, I ask you to keep on keeping on. Continue to innovate and seek new methods to help your congregation grow as disciples and serve your community. Invest in online worship and plan to make it an extension of your church even after we can resume in-person gatherings. Continue to encourage and engage in extravagant generosity because we are open for business, and your support is essential to our mission of making disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world.”

EXPECT A CALL! & SURVEY SAYS!

Hey, all!
Just want to let you all know that A.K. and Angela Hed Vincent - our in reach coordinators - and Pastor Chris are embarking on a phone calling campaign. In the next couple of weeks we're going to try to make it all the way through the directory and TOUCH BASE WITH FOLKS.
We'll have a couple of questions, and we'll mostly be wanting to hear your voice!

ALSO: We've got some plans cooking!!! And are enjoying small groups every single week.
And....

HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF OUR SURVEY:
We had 45 responders and you will be happy to know, that out of all of them, only 3 households either don’t have an extra roll of toilet paper, or are unwilling to share that information!

Nearly 1/3 of our households are partaking in restaurant food, the other 2/3 are cooking full-time at home. It sounds like everyone is enjoying an abundance of food either way!

45% of our respondents are retired, 45% are working from home.
30% of people who responded are working in an essential business.
Six responders are either temporarily unemployed or laid off.
The rest of our folks have been doing school work.
Prayers for everyone.

Whatever you’re doing you are keeping busy!
Your responses show that our congregation as a whole is keeping a healthy balance of mental/physical, solitary/group, and indoor/outdoor activities, and we seem to be saying our prayers (there have been more than 60 people coming together in our online worship every week).

We have located the following 2020 high school graduates:
Beth Nielsen
Paul Nielsen
Alicia Velasquez Eberhart
AND
Jake Velasquez Eberhart graduates from Hamline University!
CONGRATULATIONS, BETH, PAUL, ALICIA and JAKE!!!
We want to honor our grads! Please, please, please let us know if we are missing anyone!

Our survey results show that many of us will be mourning the loss of graduations, important birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and even an ordination (Abigail Ozanne). And at the same time, we are finding new ways to connect and celebrate.

One thing we learned is that almost 80% of folks who responded have learned something new during this time. We are learning that there are some things that feel healing and wholesome at this time, and other things we are impatient to put behind us.

One thing that came through loud and clear was that no one is missing the traffic! Another trend we found is that hugs matter, we miss being within 6 feet of our friends, and we are (for the most part) finding something to enjoy.

We are clearly resilient, resourceful, and downright persistent people. Our community and our independence are serving us well.
In short, we are doing alright!
We are glad to have a little bit of data to back that up.

During the month of June we will be collecting money for food shelves.
Watch for details in next week's Friday Update!

The people of PPUMC stand with the Minnesota Conference in rejecting the

Traditional Plan approved at General Conference 2019 as inconsistent

with the gospel message and will resist its implementation.

We remain committed to full inclusion.

LOVE GROWS HERE.
