The Paralympians' Fight for Equality

It’s one of the oldest stories out there: Disabled worker performs the same job as able-bodied colleagues, gets the same results, but receives lower pay and less recognition. The US Paralympians who compete next year in Tokyo are turning that story on its head. After decades of "less-than" status, they’ll enter the Games as full equals to their Olympic teammates, with the same medal bonuses and an athlete representing them on the USOPC's Board of Directors. Nobody fought harder for these new privileges than Katie Holloway, an amputee who’s won three Paralympic medals (two silver, one gold) with the US women’s sitting volleyball team. For the first time, here's the whole story.

The Climb to Cotopaxi

It takes a lot of equipment to get to the top of Cotopaxi, the highest peak in South America at 19,347 feet. Even elite mountaineers can't get there without crampons, poles, axes, ropes and who knows what else. If you happen to use a prosthetic leg as well, that's just another piece of gear—or so we learned from In Her Shoes, a gorgeous 20-minute documentary about the amputees who reached Cotopaxi's summit last fall. To paraphrase one of the participants: Heart and mind are the only two essential parts of the kit. Everything else is merely an accessory. Meet the climbers, follow their journey.
