Emmanuel Family:

Come Holy Spirit!
It's Pentecost!

If you have not begun planning your household's participation in our dispersed Pentecost celebration with the materials for today, they can be downloaded in full here. A text-only version follows as well.

HOME WORSHIP

If you wish to use video resources, have a computer open to our playlist on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/EMECpentecost
Put on something red, and then light a candle to begin the service.

Alleluia. Christ is risen!
The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Sing, or join Emmanuel musicians in singing on the video playlist, Hymn 516 in the 1982 Hymnal

 Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardor glowing.
O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,
And kindle it, Thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let Thy glorious light shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the power of human telling;
For none can guess its grace, till Love create a place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Collect
Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Read aloud from your own Bible, or watch parishioners reading on our YouTube playlist, the narrative of the first Pentecost, Acts 2:1-21

Response:
Can you think of a time when you have seen God making it possible for people who think, live, and speak differently to understand one another? Discuss answers in your household, or journal privately.
Alternatively, you may watch Mother Beth’s homily on the playlist. When you are finished, pray together:

The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,* alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,* alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit who searches even the depths of God:
Alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of the Lord now fills the whole world,* alleluia, alleluia.

Spiritual Communion
In union, blessed Jesus, with the faithful gathered at every altar of your Church where your blessed Body and Blood are offered this day (and remembering particularly my own parish) I long to offer you praise and thanksgiving, for creation and all the blessings of this life, for the redemption won for us by your life, death, and resurrection, for the means of grace and the hope of glory.

I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament, and, since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart. I unite myself with you and embrace you with all my heart, my soul, and my mind. Let nothing separate me from you; let me serve you in this life until, by your grace, I come to your glorious kingdom and unending peace. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Closing Prayer
Almighty and ever-living God, by your will the celebration of Easter is summed up in the mystery of Pentecost. Grant that the peoples you have scattered across the earth, speaking many tongues, may unite in proclaiming your greatness and be gathered back together by the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord, alleluia, alleluia.
Thanks be to God, alleluia, alleluia.

Sing hymn 510 in the 1982 Hymnal, or join in with Emmanuel musicians singing it on the video playlist.

1 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
with all thy quickening powers;
kindle a flame of sacred love
in these cold hearts of ours.

2 See how we trifle here below,
fond of these earthly toys:
our souls, how heavily they go,
to reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
in vain we strive to rise:
hosannas languish on our tongues,
and our devotion dies.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
with all thy quickening powers;
come, shed abroad a Savior's love,
and that shall kindle ours.
