Welcoming Home Baby Z

This past week, two of our tenants, Ms. M and Ms. J, became mothers--welcoming into the world little baby Z! HousingPlus, alongside a new and generous partner, Allen Memorial A.M.E. Church in Brooklyn, put together a bag of goodies and necessities for the new parents and baby when they arrived home. But what makes this even more exciting? Little Z and his mommies are one of the first families to move into Soleil House, a housing program at our newly opened building Linwood Park Apartments.

In fact, Ms. M and Ms. J are one of three families who will be moving into Soleil House next week. All of the families were previously living in Liberty House--our transitional housing program for formerly justice-involved women. Imagine for a moment, being detained at the women’s facility on Rikers Island without knowing when you were going to be released, while your wife is pregnant and living in a city shelter. You wonder whether you’ll be able to give your newborn a safe and stable place to call home. But then you’re connected to a program, the Women’s Community Justice Project, which quickly acts to get you out of Rikers, into safe transitional housing for families, and then identifies permanent housing for you and your family to move into after getting home from the hospital. Imagine cooking that first meal while the baby sleeps. Your own set of pots and pans. Dishes and glasses on which you serve your grandmother’s prized, secret family recipe. That’s the moment when a spatula is no longer just a spatula. It symbolizes the fresh start you, your wife, and your little boy needed.

Help us give Soleil House families a fresh start and a happy housewarming by purchasing a houseware bundle today.

Welcome Home Mothers and Their Families Here
Our COCObundle campaign provides our new families with bedding, kitchenware, bathroom linens, and now personal protective masks! Here are a few great reasons to shop for good:
  • When you buy a bundle, you're giving a tangible gift to a family in need—and your gift also provides logistical support for HousingPlus (so we can stay focused on our mission!).
  • The items in each COCObundle are durable and made to last. Gifting new, quality items offers dignity and reminds our neighbors that they are worthy.
  • Every bundle now comes with a face mask to ensure our families continue to stay safe as parts of New York begin to open.

Bundles will be shipped directly to the Linwood Park Apartments, which will add 100 units of affordable housing to East New York. HousingPlus will provide rental assistance and social services to 30 of these units that will specifically serve formerly homeless families.

Our campaign runs until May 31. Visit cocobundle.co/housingplus for more details!

We’re on the move--in more ways than one.

HousingPlus is expanding to serve more women and children through Soleil House--and we’re moving our property management, case management, and employment services staff all under one roof to create a “one stop shop” of support for our clients and tenants. We’ve already received some generous office furniture donations (shout out to TF Cornerstone for their support!). Please help us collect other like-new and gently used office furniture to set up our team members in their new space:

  • 4 side tables for our lobby

  • 1 coffee table for our lobby

  • 5 waiting area chairs for our lobby

  • 2 conference tables (one 8-seat and one 15-seat table with chairs)

  • 4 tall bookshelves

  • 6 small meeting tables with chairs for our tenant conference areas

  • 1 kitchen table with 8 chairs

Please contact development@housingplusnyc.org with more information about the item, including 1-2 photos. Thank you in advance for your help!

Now more than ever, #WeFight4Her

We, alongside our sister organization the Women’s Community Justice Association (WCJA) are deeply concerned about the spread of coronavirus in city and county jail facilities in the NYC metropolitan area, as well as in downstate prisons. A recent report by CBS New York recorded the rate of infection at Rikers Island is 7 times that of the general population in New York City. In a recent report from the Board of Corrections, we learned that 76% of women being detained in city jails have likely been exposed to the virus but are asymptomatic, while others have been confirmed as infected with COVID-19. In response, WCJA alongside a number of individual and institutional advocates, founded the COVID-19 Justice for Women Taskforce in April 2020 to bring women home and improve the conditions for women at any facility in NYS; and at the Rose M. Singer Center in New York City. One of our members, Suzanne Singer, recently published this op-ed in The New York Times calling on swift and meaningful changes in the conditions for women and those who identify as women who currently reside at her grandmother’s namesake facility, the Rose M. Singer Center on Rikers Island. Housing more than 150 women at last count, “Rosie’s” has been beset by the virus, causing reductions in staff and services, as well as an ever-growing spread of COVID-19 diagnoses that is life-threatening for too many.

While our efforts to attend to the immediate needs of women currently residing in jail facilities has been our priority response during this pandemic, our overall goals remain the same: decarceration of city jail facilities, the establishment of one standalone facility for women, and reinvestment into alternatives to detention/incarceration programs to further help decarceration efforts. The current crisis has underscored the importance of this work and reaffirmed our commitment to women in and out of the legal system.
