The Jewish holiday of Shavuot is one of three agricultural pilgrimage holidays, widely associated with the giving of the Torah (Hebrew Bible) on Mount Sinai and observed with late night study sessions and eating dairy.
Shavuot also marks the end of the barley season and the start of the wheat season, and invites us to give praise to the land and the farmers who make the bounty possible.
Education Manager Sharone Oren reminds us that while "the plant, in all its wondrous and mysterious ways, does most of the growing and producing of the food on its own... it is the farmer and the land they work on that continues to feed us, and for that, we should be thankful." THIS SUNDAY, we also invite you to join us and our partners at the Hive for Gratitude Harvest: A Shavuot Experience. We will gather together for a ritual that was practiced by Jewish farming communities on the eve of Shavuot.
Bring your literal or figurative "first fruits," participate in an "Amen Circle," and experience this incredible intersection of farming and Jewish tradition.
During the period between the holidays of Passover and Shavuot, Jewish communities count the Omer as a way to stay present and grounded.
Join Coastal Roots Farm and our partners at The Hive in marking this time through a community time capsule by sharing a note, video, voice message, or photo.
Time capsule submissions will be shared at Hivedalah on May 30 and revealed again in one year when we are all together again.
Coastal Roots Farm is offering free personalized farm-based experiences thanks to community support.
Online content includes a short video on topics such as pollination and the power of plants plus a follow up activity ranging from art to recipes to story read-alouds.
