COVID-19: business update 21 May

Hello, I’m Cllr Mike Evemy, Cabinet Member for Finance. I reported last week that we had received the guidance for the new Discretionary Business Grant scheme and that it was going to take time to set up robust application, assessment and validation processes. I am pleased to report that this work is on schedule for us to launch the scheme in the first week of June.

We will announce full details of the scheme next week but I can confirm now that those who are eligible for other government grants (with the exception of the Job Retention Scheme) will not be eligible for this discretionary grant. Applications will open for a two week period during the first week of June.

New grants from Enterprise Nation

Enterprise Nation has teamed up with Salesforce on a grant scheme for small businesses. Grants of £5,000 are available to help companies through the COVID-19 outbreak. To be eligible, companies must:
  • Be registered at Companies House
  • Have been established for at least 12 months
  • Have not received any Government cash grant during 2020 in relation to COVID-19
  • Be based in the UK with a British bank account
  • Have between 2 to 50 employees
Applications will open in six regional phases - Gloucestershire businesses can apply between 15 and 21 June.

Future Fund open for applications

The Future Fund, which issues convertible loans to innovative UK companies that typically rely on equity investment and are currently affected by Covid-19, is open for applications

The application process is investor-led and the Fund will match 100% of the amount provided by investor(s), up to a maximum of £5 million. The scheme is initially open for applications until the end of September 2020.

Is your business safe to open?

Where workplaces are open, precautions need to be taken to reduce risks to both the workers and the public. These include some things that will seem obvious and others that could be easily overlooked such as the risk of legionella developing in water systems that have been or remain dormant.

The council has published a checklist to help you ensure you have measures in place to keep both employees and customers safe.

Are you a landlord with an empty property?

The COVID-19 crisis has left more people than ever living in temporary accommodation so the council is looking to team up with local landlords to help those in need. We're asking for anyone with a property available for private letting to get in touch - whether the property is available immediately or in the coming year, whether it is currently listed with an estate agent or you are an independent landlord.

By renting through the council, landlords can enjoy a range of benefits including no agency fees, a free property assessment and an ongoing comprehensive package of support for both landlords and tenants. Our team can help to bridge any communication gaps, and help tenants with a range of things from navigating the benefits system, to helping somebody gain employment; ultimately helping to sustain tenancies.
