Dear Friends,

A Certificate Of Appreciation For Those Who Donated At Our Dinner

Our Hugh Lantz Award Winner Kirk Holden sent the Sons & Daughters of Erin this Certificate of Appreciation from him and his fellow soldiers for the care package we sent him last month.

Since Holden was unable to be present at our March dinner because he is serving abroad in the military, we asked for donations of coffee, beef jerky and sanitary wipes that filled two large boxes. As you may recall, Holden declined the sanitary wipes donations and instead ask we donate them to those who were in need as a result of the coronavirus quarantine. They ended up being donated to the homeless residing at the Reno Events Center.

Thanks to Kirk and his fellow soldiers for their service to our nation and for keeping us safe. I am sure I can say on behalf of all of us who donated, "The pleasure was all ours."

SADOE Member Assists Disabled Woman With Relocation and Mobility

SADOE Member Donald Abbott spent last week assisting a disabled elderly woman who was living in a bug invested motel to a cleaner place and donated his late father’s scooter.

Abbot, a Sparks city councilman, joined several other community members and elected officials raising nearly $5,000 to cover living and relocation costs. He also  spent hours on Friday personally relocating the woman as well as assisting in finding her new place.

“As my father approached the end of his beautiful life he lived he got a scooter to get around on, said Abbot in a Facebook post last Friday. “After he passed the scooter found it's home in the garage until today! Put some new batteries in it and will be donating this to Denise!”

SADOE President’s Dog Wins Another Prize

A few weeks ago, yours truly entered a photo with my Scottie-Terrier "Pepper" in Sport Kilt's Comforts of Home Photo Contest, where you were encouraged to send in a photo wearing a kilt doing an activity around the home. I submitted a photo of me walking my dog in my Clan Donald kilt with Pepper wearing a matching bandanna and was notified last week I had won Third Place, which I was awarded a $50 Gift Certificate.

Pepper seems to be my good luck charm because as you might recall, last year I won Best Human-Dog Look Alike Contest at the Artown Art Paws Event with my pooch.

Membership Drive Now Underway

SADOE's membership drive is underway and  we ask that you begin thinking of renewing your dues if you have not paid them yet. If you have not joined yet, we ask that you do so now.

Some of you should be receiving in mail today or next few days an envelope with a membership application and addressed envelope for your convenience. Our membership dues are a significant part  to our annual budget.

So I will ask you to please pay your membership dues if you are able to before our June 30 deadline so we can plan our annual budget. Our model has been to donate to local charities and Celtic organizations, once we have established our operating budget for the year. However, due to the uncertainty of the months to come, may likely be vital for our organization.

We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to when we can start holding gatherings again. You may download a membership form which is attached in this message or by clicking on this link.

Naval Vessel That Commemorated The Loss Of An Irish-American Family

This past Monday we celebrated Memorial Day, which was a reminder of the families that have sacrificed their loved ones in the fight for freedom over the centuries.Few have lost so much in so short a space of time as the Sullivan family.

Irish Central has a story about five Irish-American brothers who died  died on November 13, 1942, while serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Juneau during WWII.

Less than a year later, USS The Sullivans was commissioned in memory of the five brave Sullivan brothers and became the first multiple-person namesake of a ship in US Naval history.
