📊 May is Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month

Our May research brief examines mental health, suicide risk, and LGBTQ identity disclosure and acceptance among Asian/Pacific Islander LGBTQ youth. We found that even though Asian/Pacific Islander youth were less likely to disclose their LGBTQ identity to parents, most Asian/Pacific Islander youth shared their LGBTQ identities and were accepted by friends — and this acceptance reduced the risk of attempting suicide by more than half. This research highlights the need for culturally-grounded mental health care and suicide prevention initiatives that take into account the unique experiences of Asian/Pacific Islander LGBTQ youth.

☎️ U.S. Senate approves 988 number for suicide prevention lifeline

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed S. 2661, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act. If this bill becomes law, our government will start the process of changing the National Lifeline number from 1-800-273-8255 to 988, making it so much easier for people to know how to get help in a moment of crisis. Even better, this bill requires the Lifeline to take action toward offering specialized services for groups at greater risk of suicide — specifically including LGBTQ youth.

Want to help us turn this bill into law? Now we need the House of Representatives to pass similar legislation before this can be signed into law. Please join us in calling for Congress to pass the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act »

👟 Out Now: The Sky Modern Trevor Project

To raise awareness of LGBTQ youth mental health this month, we’ve teamed up with PUMA to bring you our first collaboration with the sports brand: the limited-edition Sky Modern Trevor Project. The Sky Modern is PUMA’s premier basketball shoe and is worn by NBA and WNBA players on the court. 100% of sales will benefit Trevor. Over the next three years, we’ll be working closely with PUMA to promote positive mental health outcomes for LGBTQ youth athletes and increase their participation in sports. Consider our partnership a slam dunk.
