New or Noteworthy News


NEW! Free Virtual Tax Clinic at MWSA, Thursday May 28 from 9 AM-12 PM. If you have yet to file your 2019 Income Tax and have an income of less than $35 000, you can sign up for our Virtual Tax Clinic with our partnership with the CPA. These clinics will be done over Zoom (video-conferencing), and you must have a smartphone or computer access. This is a free service, but you must pre-register. We'll give you a specific time slot (one 30-minute time slot for each individual) on May 28.  Limited spots are available. To register, email karen@mwsac.ca with the subject line, "Tax Clinic"

NEW!! NEW 4-WEEK SESSION OF ONLINE TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING CLASS with MWSA instructor, Kristen Vogt, Thursdays, 10-11 AM, May 28 - June 18, 2020. This class is a full-body workout, using your own body weight. Participants should be mobile, and have a moderate fitness level, though all exercises will be modified as needed. Cost by donation with proceeds split between MWSA & instructor. Please email karen@mwsac.ca with the subject line "Total Body Conditioning" to register. Recommended donation: $25 or more for the 4 classes.
NEW!! VIRTUAL MEETING WITH COUNCILLOR ANDREW KNACK, June 1st from 10-11:30  AM. Councillor Knack will be joining us via Zoom to answer your questions and give you updates from City Council. Email karen@mwsac.ca with the subject line "Councillor Knack" for a Zoom invite.

Board Updates/AGM News: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta’s Corporate Registry has permitted us to postpone the 2020 AGM. Until an AGM is held and the membership elects a new Board of Directors, the current Board will continue in a “caretaker capacity.” The annual report will be published soon!
MWSA Updates: While the Government of Alberta has announced a Relaunch Strategy. We are in the last stages of re-opening. MWSA remains closed to the public, for the safety and well-being of our members. Check our website for regular updates and additional information: www.mwsac.ca

Thanks for your participation in our ONLINE PROGRAMMING SURVEY.  


Seniors, Join us for Recess!  It's an inter-generational program, where seniors and kids (8-12 years old) will come together for conversations and games. It's a great way to connect with your youthful side/inner kid, and to learn about a different generation. Plus, it's fun and freeWednesdays 1-2 PM! MWSA ONLINE CLASSES/PROGRAMS HAVE STARTED!  You can still drop-in anytime! Our Pilates and Stretch and Release Class will run until the end of June. Cost: By donation (proceeds will be split with instructor & MWSA). To register, email karen at karen@mwsac.ca.


 
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES TAX-FREE FUNDING FOR SENIORS. The Government of Canada announced they are providing a one-time tax-free payment of $300 for seniors eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, with an additional $200 for seniors eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). COVID-19: Practise good hygiene to help prevent illness. This includes cleaning your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, coughing or sneezing into your elbow or sleeve, and disposing of tissues appropriately. Please stay home if you are sick! Any individual exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, or shortness of breath, is eligible for testing. People can access testing by completing the COVID-19 self-assessment online

Learn how to download and use Zoom (online platform for meetings and online programs). This is also a good option for video chatting with friends and family!!
MWSA Programs Cancellations & Refunds: MWSA will be offering $25 credit per registered fitness course, or you can choose to donate the Mill Woods Seniors Association, for the missed classes, and we will issue you a charitable tax receipt. Please email program.coordinator@mwsac.ca.

Edmonton International Cats Festival: Online Edition
Celebrate cats, cat culture and cat people at the VIRTUAL Cat Festival, with 100% of ticket proceeds going to animal rescues.

LIVESTREAM CONCERTS YOU CAN WATCH THIS WEEK

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS WANTED: REASONS FOR LIMITING SITTING TIME FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF OLDER ADULTS
Older adults 65 years and older are invited to participate in a study investigating why older adults choose to reduce daily sitting time. Individuals of all fitness levels are encouraged to participate. The survey takes 30-45 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary and confidential. In appreciation for your time spent completing this survey, each participant will be entered into a draw for one of four $25 VISA gift cards. For more information, email PALS@uleth.ca or call 403-332-5207.

#GROWOLDERWITHME THIS SENIORS' WEEK
Seniors' Week is June 1 - 7. While we can't get together in-person, we can celebrate virtually! Age Friendly Edmonton is starting a conversation to highlight the many positives of aging. To participate, submit your name, age, a good quality photo of yourself and a short paragraph about what you're looking forward to about growing older. An online submission form will be released soon. If you would like to participate, email agefriendly@edmonton.ca. The first 100 participants will be eligible to receive a $5 Tim Hortons gift card (some restrictions apply).
