May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
Like most commemorative months, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Click here for more information about this month.

We are living in historic times!
It's not too late to start a journal of your everyday activities and feelings and encourage your students and children to do the same. In 10 or 15 years when students are studying history these journals will be important primary sources. They will be even more important when today's children are parents and grandparents. Many will be asked what life was like in the time of COVID-19 and the answer will be found in these journals.
Thinking ahead to summer, the State Library and California Library Association are planning a statewide community history project encouraging Californians of all ages to submit their art, stories, journal entries, and poems for the COVID Diaries Project. This will be a snapshot of the thoughts and feelings of Californians in the time of COVID. More information to come soon.

Life Skills - Valuable Learning while
Sheltering in Place
Household chores involve using math and reading skills to follow directions and organizational skills for time management.
Parents are their children's first teachers and everything they do at home is teaching and modeling for their children. Keep it up all summer long and children will come back to school in the fall with reading and math skills honed by a fun-filled summer of cooking, gardening, making a schedule, and helping others while developing life skills and self esteem.
Attention Teachers!
The Tumble Book Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. Also included are games and puzzles. TumbleBooks are created in flash animation. You will need the Flash plug-in for your browser and a computer set up for sound. Santa Cruz Public Libraries subscribe to Tumblebooks and you can find the link on our Kids Page here.
