SPECIAL FESTIVALS – SANTO TOMÁS DAY IN CHICHICASTENANGO (December)

Its full name is Santo Tomás Chichicastenango; “Santo Tomás” in honor of its patron saint: Tomás Apóstol and “Chichistenango” from the Nahuatl dialect meaning “wall  of nettles”.  Chichicastenango is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of the Quiché and known for its cultural richness and the famed local market where locals from surrounding villages gather around the Main Plaza each Thursday and Sunday to trade, a tradition carried on for many decades.  A less known fact is that here is the place where the most sacred book of the Mayans was found, the "Popol Vuh" that, according to its ancestors, tells of the origin of humanity.

Although the Spanish introduced Catholicism in Guatemala, the ceremonies and traditions of the Maya-Quiché in “Chichi” are currently deeply rooted. Its religious fervor and syncretism between the Christian and Maya Cosmovision is evident all over the town and mainly around and inside the Church of Santo Tomás, built by the Spanish in 1540.
