Your say on the impact of COVID-19 on the electrical industry

Recently MEA surveyed electrical contractors across the industry to understand the impact COVID-19 has had on businesses to accurately support our advocacy to Government.

The overview of these findings will be shared with the Federal and State Governments to direct ongoing discussions on support and stimulus required for the industry into the recovery phase.

Significantly, 59% of contractors declared they've experienced a decline in their business of more than 30% – notably the eligibility threshold for many of the Federal and State Government support packages.

Electrical installations — Shows and carnival events

Do you install temporary lighting or power for public markets, school fetes or festivals?

Standards Australia is inviting public comment on a new standard to supersede AS/NZS 3002:2008. This edition was prepared to update requirements for the use of electricity for lighting and power in concessions, stands, tents, booths and other show and carnival event structures in conjunction with the issue of AS/NZS 3000:2018.

This is your opportunity to share your feedback including what you do and don’t like in the draft before the Standard is adopted. The closing date for feedback is 19 June 2020.

ATO: What can tradies claim for vehicles?

ATO Tax TipWith tax time just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what you can and can’t claim in your tax return.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has shared a series of handy tips to help tradies when claiming vehicle expenses.
  • You can claim the cost of using a car you own when you drive between sites and to and from alternate workplaces for the same employer on the same day.
  • You can’t claim a deduction for the cost of normal trips between your home and work, except in limited circumstances.

WA: Earthing of lighting points and luminaires

The WA DMIRS has issued an advisory notice for property owners about the earthing of lighting points and luminaires. It notes that State electrical safety regulations require all lighting points to have earth protection using a conductor connected to the main earth of the building’s electrical installation.

Unfortunately, some owners purchase lighting fittings from Australian or overseas sources which do not meet the required earthing standard. Licensed electrical contractors and their employed electricians must refuse to install such fittings unless they can be modified to comply with the earthing safety requirement.

Electrical contractors in WA can download the notice to use in the education of owners and occupiers.
