On Outdoor Classroom Day we’re celebrating #PlayfulNature, and thinking about how learning and play outside could become an essential, maybe majority, part of the school day.
Reopening schools is not a straightforward decision. We take no stand on when it should happen, that's up to the schools. But we have an unprecedented opportunity here for teachers to learn the skills, find the space and gather the right clothing and equipment to make outdoor learning part of every day.
Alongside safety concerns we need to balance the potential risks of leaving lockdown restrictions in place, particularly in terms of children's mental health, their social well being and their happiness.
We know being outside and connecting to nature can restore our sense of wellbeing. For children, this connection is best made through play.
Right now is the right time to think radical solutions to give maximum space for play and learning outdoors, for reconnecting with the safe place that is their school.
Please do get involved with the Outdoor Classroom Day campaign. They have loads of ideas so you and your family, neighbours and friends can connect to nature from your garden, balcony or even your living room today and every day.
And should you be up for a challenge, we'd love 30 second video clips as to why you (or your children) think playing outdoors is, right now, what children should be doing. You can share your photos on social media using #PlayfulNature!
