We get a lot of emails from folks we don’t know. People pitching stories, wanting us to link them. On occasion someone webby inquires about the website.

But most of all, young people are looking for jobs and opportunities.

We’ve always tried to respond to these, as best we can, particularly the considerate people that write a good email and package their info well. Never know where these little exchanges will lead.

Lately we’ve observed a new wave of emails. Things like:

“I just moved to NYC and have been working at xxxxx, but that’s no more…”

”All my internships fell through…”

“There is literally nothing to do here now? I guess I’m moving home?”

Suddenly it feels challenging offering young people meaningful thoughts or words of wisdom. How is an intern supposed to shadow and assist via webcam? How will they overhear interesting conversations and cool records on the hifi? How do you sneak in if there’s no office?

To enter a remote first, remote only workplace seems like such a sadness.

What’s the answer? Besides using this time for self publishing self initiated projects with inspiring digital collaborators, and in the process, getting really good at computers? We do not know.
