a secondary field for Harvard graduate students

After a busy start to the semester – with our info session, art & science lunch, color grading and art documentation workshops, capstone critiques, and two larger gatherings – COVID-19 compelled Critical Media Practice to cancel some spring programming and move the rest online. We are now planning for the fall and will post CMP courses and events on our website over the summer.

NEWS

On February 26-27, Harvard hosted a group of graduate students and faculty from the SACRe doctoral research/arts program at Université Paris Sciences et Lettres for an exchange of critiques and conversation about Inquiry Through Practice. You can read reports of the experience from CMP student Julia Sharpe and SACRe student Joseph Minster on our blog.

On February 28, CMP convened a workshop at the Radcliffe Institute on Artistic Practice in the Research University which brought together faculty and graduate students from six research universities with innovative programs that unite artistic practice and scholarly inquiry.

"Remote Research During a Pandemic" – CMP's first capstone work realized in the form of a webinar – was presented on May 5 by CMP Student and Doctor of Science Candidate Alen Agaronov from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

We are delighted to announce that as of July 1, Joana Pimenta will be Director of Graduate Studies for CMP and Interim Director of the Film Study Center.

Two new students have been admitted to the CMP secondary field: Anna Hopper from Government and Omar Salomão from Romance Languages and Literatures. Welcome Anna and Omar!

NEW CRITIQUE PROGRAM

We are excited to be developing a new CMP critique program which will begin next academic year in whatever form is possible within the university's COVID-19 guidelines. CMP students will be required to show work-in-progress versions of their capstone projects, and other projects related to their capstone, twice a year after their third year in the program: at a school-wide peer critique in the fall, to which all CMP students are invited; and at a school-wide faculty critique in the spring, to which CMP students, faculty, guest artists, filmmakers, and curators are invited.

Students’ work should be installed during the week prior to the critiques in the available space that is most suitable for the needs of the work. These critiques will take place during a full weekend (Friday through Sunday) twice per academic year, generally in October and April. Stay tuned for more info!
